Why a prequel anyway?

Prequels are such a slippery slope and so far Trek has not had a good record with the idea. There is so much time unaccounted for on-screen between "Turnabout Intruder" and STTMP. Why not finish the five year mission?

I like the idea of a prequel because it touches on the history of the star trek universe. The only thing I have reservations over concerning the new movie is that they are using established characters. I think they should make completely new characters.

That's a prequel to the movies. Same set of problems - or worse.

The first mission of the TOS crew to me seems like an interesting time period. It shows how the characters developed prior to the time we meet them in TOS.

I agree why a prequel, there is so much more to trek then to maybe make the mistake of destorying good trek history, yes i know trek has many mistakes .But to recast the the crew and it might not work where do they go after it,and it can't be about the first misson most of the crew were not aboard, if we going by the second pilot . Yes i know its all hear say but lets stick to what we know. I would have no complaints about in between the last epsiode and the first movie so much more ,and trek new voyages have pulled it off and i dont mind the cast as they tell good stories.

I think a prequel works the best right now. Those characters were the best in Star Trek by far. They still touch me more than anyone else could in Trek they always brought in the most box office for Trek movies. I think it would be hard to sell a new crew to non Trek fans if they tried to go that direction and the TNG crews weren't going to sell much on the big screen either.

"Can't?"

Many ST novels and comics have presented excellent stories about early days on the Enterprise, that very comfortably lead into WNMHGB, sometimes only by mentioning Sulu in astrophysics, and McCoy on temporary leave for his daughter's graduation. "Can't" is a mighty strong word.

Personally, i would have preffered a story with nothing to do with Kirk & Co and the Enterprise.

I would have proffered a story which did what Enterprise failed miserably to do...

Entertain, hold an audience and actually be a prequel and successfully lay the law of the land for the future ahead.

Done properly, Enterprise wouldve kicked ass. Alas, it wasnt to be.
