Who was the elderly extra?

I kept noticing this guy in the background of Voyager's crew scenes. He looked of Afro-Caribbean descent, had grey hair and seemed quite elderly. I think he wore a sciences blue uniform.

I guess he was just an unimportant extra for background effect but that guy really fascinated me because I can't find him on any cast lists. I would have loved to have known more about him, who he was, what his history was, whether he made it back home. Did he get written into any books or comics at all?

I don't think background types get listed. Memory Alpha is full of "Unknown Performers".

I've noticed him too, I know exactly who you're talking about.

There are so few people with grey hair or visibly older as well as poc in Trek that they really stand out. If you watch the earlier movies it's very striking that there are older people who are not svelte, actual fattish folk in the backgrounds which you never seen in the newer movies.

He's definitely noticeable isn't he? When I first saw him, I did not fancy his chances of making it back home.

Now, I seem to remember that--at first--they wanted Tuvok to be much older--perhaps played by Robert Guillaume from Benson.

Maybe this was a kind of homage of sorts

Looking at Memory Alpha, the actor was also in a TOS episode. The character's name in that episode was Ellison. So in my head canon it's the same guy. A Starfleet lifer. He also in some TNG episodes.

Well... if that were the case, then he should be even older like Admiral McCoy. I think it would be a stretch for him to be on active duty.

...assuming the character is human, that is.

Here's his Memory Alpha page. It's a shame he didn't get a name.

That's the fella. Yeah, it is a shame that he didn't get a name, and he was in quite a few episodes too, well into season 4.

However, this typo made me laugh...

In an alternate timeline created by the temporal incursions of the Krenim weapon ship, he was among the patients in sockbay who had to be evacuated from deck 5.
Is that where Voyager keeps its socks?

The elderly extra is McCabe.

Well, not exactly. It just me trying to sort things out. I've managed to collect an assortment of pictures stolen from the net of Voyager extras and given them names after characters in the Voyager books.

McCabe shows up in the Voyager book "The Garden" although he doesn't make any significant or spectacular. Just like the guy in the series.

I'm planning to create a page on the Kes Website with a lot of those "named extras" in the near future!

That is awesome--just checked out the page as well. He's got a long history with Trek!

Don't harsh my head canon,bro.

I think he's a Douwd, like that Kevin Uxbridge in that TNG episode "The Survivors".

He was Ellison back in the TOS days. Then to avoid being discovered as a Douwd, he changed his identity to McCabe in the 24th century when he was on the Enterprise and later on he was on Voyager.

How ahout we just call him John Copage? That's his real life name, nothing wrong with it as a name. Pretty standard and respectable name, only one we authoritively have for the guy. If you have a human extra like that, and it isn't absurd, let them he themselves. Easiest solution.

There are a handful of different extras that I notice often in the background. Trek likes to reuse their extras

My head canon is that when the same actor appears again, it's the exact same character too.

In most cases there's no reason it shouldn't be the same character. Though sometimes the same actor appears as different characters or different species

Gorkon and St. John Talbot are really the same person. There was some kind of clandestine undercover mission. Also, every Jeffrey Combs character was the same character. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :shifty:

So... Vaughan Armstrong didn't play Admiral Forrest? He played a shapeshifter! And every alien he played was really the same person.

I'm seeing Trek in a new light now. ;)
