For every story when a Klingon (or Klingons) are the antagonist a set of defining characteristics was drawn. These sets were dictated by the needs of the plot of the week, but were amalgamated into Trek lore and influenced the following appearances fo the Klingons.

At the same time, different actors and directors imprinted their particular talents on their episodes and movies

Then not all Klingons are the same. So who do you prefer?

Kor, of course.

Though you might have separated out a couple of the 24th-century Klingons like Worf, Gowron and Martok...

Kor

Kor was the first appearance, so for me he defined Klingons. Smart, devious, ruthless. Casually bloodthirsty. Favorite Klingon.
Kang is my second favorite, because he added dimension to villains who otherwise all seemed to be trying to live up to John Collicos' Kor. He had a family and a sense of honor and the brains to figure out there was a bigger enemy than his political adversary.
Koloth had the virtue of appearing in a memorable episode.
Chang is probably my fourth favorite Klingon because he was, like Kor, devious and ruthless.
Post TOS Klingons are really something else. My favorite among them is Martok.

Of TOS era, Kor is my favorite. Deliciously devious, cunning. ...a worthy adversary for Kirk.
Movie era: Toss up between Kruge and Chang. Kruge because he defined how I speak what little thl'ngan I do, and because he was just a badass. Chang because he was the classically quiet villain with just a touch of mania.

TNG/DS9 era: Martok, Worf, Gowron, Kor.

It was difficult, but I had to pick Kor. He set the stage for things to come - that, and I have to admit really liking John Colicos as an actor. Kang would be next. There is something to be said about Michael Ansara's voice. I would loved to have seen them reprise their roles back in TOS. Together would have been epic.

Kang

Chang
The Ambassador
Kruge
Koloth
Kras
Biiiiiiiiiggggg gap
Kerla
Torg
Maltz
The Bozos

I would have voted for Martok if I could. Why post this TOS biased poll in the General Trek forum instead of the TOS forum?

Kor, of course.

Kor

Chang for me, but I agree that those 24th century characters listed deserved a spot.

It's because out of all the Klingons encountered on the later shows, only perhaps Gowron, Duras and Worf had the intelligence or cunning required to build a spacefaring civilization

Martok. He understood more about Klingons than most Klingons. Same goes for Worf, in a way. A lot of Klingons, by the 24th century, had lost their way. They were so obsessed with the entire concept of honor, that they forgot what it was actually about. Anything they did, was good and honorable, because they were Klingon, and that made it honorable by default. Martok, Worf, they understood what it actually ment. That honor wasn't something you had simply because you're Klingon, you had to earn it.
