who took over jadzia's position?

BlackFire3

Lieutenant Commander

jadzia was the stations chief science officer till dukat killed her. what i'm wondering is, who replaced her as the chief science officer?

Seems to me that Julian took over most of any kind of science role, but still, most of the series after she died was war, and science over all took a back seat in my opinion when it comes to the story lines.

This makes sense. Lot of the Jadzia-centric episodes not about the Trill had to do with scientific discoveries before the war started. Jadzia acted as a second XO basically with Kira during the first year of the war, with captaining the Defiant and doing covert missions. Her station wasn't used as a science station on the OPS the last two years I guess.

I doubt the station she used on the Bridge was really a science station anyways as she kept having to go to the Science lab to do any "real" work, more of a sensor station for DS9's security to external or internal threats.

After all the Cardassians built the station and a Intelligence Officers station (which would include the sensor systems) would be considered more of a asset (for the Obsidian Order) then a Science station would be.

There was no one established on screen as taking over the science officer position on DS9. I think they probably let the position be "gapped" as we say in the Navy because of the war they never filled the position. Even Dax herself hadn't done much in that aspect of her job in years.

In the DS9 follow-on "relaunch" books, starting with Avatar, they had a young Andorian man named Shar that took over the position

Yeah, the science officer role got pretty much dropped by the show anyway, and Jadzia's role seemed to be more of a general "Second Officer."

Nobody took over Jadzia's position. Her position obviously served no purpose, which is why (1) they didn't need to replace her and (2) she never had any relevance whatsoever to any of the show's over-arching storylines.

He's kinda right though, at least in this instance. I'm not party to any previous grumbles of Navaros', but on this point I agree with him.

Every regular character had their own ongoing plot line. Even Bashir has Section 31, and O'Brien has the Orion Syndicate. Jadzia has nothing.

So I'm going to agree that they didn't bother replacing her as a senior science officer for the last year of the war, because science issues simply weren't a high mission priority. Once the war was over, they reinstated the position, but still with a much lower-ranked officer, Ensign Thirishar ch'Thane (aka Shar).

It's kind of ironic really that Jadzia was on the show for six seasons and had so little long-term impact, whereas Ezri was on the show one season and has gone on to be central not only to...

the Trill/parasite arc plot of "season 8"

...but also went on to become...

one of the most important starship captains in the fleet, what with helping save the galaxy from the Borg and all.

I wonder what Terry Farrell thinks about that.

My own theory was that the science officer position was initially established in order for Starfleet to learn more about Bajor and the other worlds in that system, then became important following the discovery of the wormhole, and then became just as quickly non-essential during the Dominion War.

I would imagine that at some point after the TV series ended, a new science officer was appointed to DS9 as free traffic through the wormhole presumably recommenced and new Gamma Quadrant races were encountered, IMO...

In times of war, science officers fall silent/

I don't think the station ever had a science officer - the dialogue is devoid of mentions of one, at least.

It's just a fortunate coincidence that one of the officers sent to housekeep the station in "Emissary" happened to have enough of a sciences upbringing that she could sort out the mystery of the Celestial Temple and the Orbs. But that wasn't the job she was sent to do; more probably, Sisko requested that old man Dax accompany him on what looked like a delicate diplomatic assignment (nice to have Curzon there) that would drag on till all eternity (nice to have Curzon there!).

The station didn't really perform many roles. It just sat there; it wasn't directly tasked with defending anything, or exploring anything, or spying on anything, even though it eventually did all those things. It didn't need science officers or tactical officers or the like; it just needed traffic control officers, and lots of them.

Initially it's just there to co-ordinate relief efforts on the planet, and provide a permanent Starfleet presence. The inference is that the Bajorans don't have the expertise and resources to maintain and operate the station.

I always wondered why Sisko was given the job in the first place. It obviously wasn't his idea. I think it's said he was working at Utopia Planitia, and in The Way of the Warrior, he tells Worf he was planning to leave Starfleet and design orbital habitats, so perhaps that's the key. If he's got experience with orbital space stations, maybe Starfleet figured he'd be the perfect man to sort out the piece of Cardassian junk circling Bajor.
