Who should be the antagonist for season 2?

The Overlord

Who should be the antagonist for season 2?

I know people may say, that there should be no antagonist and the series should just be about exploration, but I think this series should still be serialized (Voyager killed my interest in episodic Star Trek), but I would like season 2 where we would see more exploration and traditional Trek elements in a season long arc, so not planet of the week stories, but not a season long war either. What I would like see is a story that combines elements of the Cold War and the original age of exploration, with the Discovery having to compete with a rival space ship for resources and the allegiance of new discovered planets.

I don't want the Klingons back, I am bit sick of them. I would rather have some new villains. I would like the Romulans to be that rival, but I heard some people say the writers can't use the Romulans for some reason, which would be a shame, because they seem like the least developed of the major Star Trek civilizations. I can live with another civilization being the rivals, either an existing one or a new one.

They can't use the Romulans because this takes place before TOS and you run into the same problem that ENT had with not showing them.

Personally, I'd be for fleshing out some really obscure one-off mentioned in passing on TOS.

I personally would say screw it and just have them be the villains, but that's just me.

I'm betting well get several protagonists.

No way Loreal and Tyler are going to move forward so quietly,

George-yo is still alive

Mudd is Mudd,

Lorca my favorite Space Asshole has to come back and ill bet with some baddies on his tail

As others have mentioned, Logic Extremists.

Could be interesting

They could always do an episode from the POV of the Romulans.

Starfleet can't see the Romulans, but it doesn't mean the reverse can't happen... ;)

Now, that I like.

Also, no reason a romulan encounter can't be classified, destroying the spore drive?

You know, making fun of a greek name like that... it isn't really funny

Making fun of any name isn't funny if no one finds it amusing.

Lucky for me I'm easily amused and amuse myself quite well.

::edit::

Any suggestions of names or types of names I'm allowed to make fun of? Old english ones? Russian ones? Aussie ones?
Or is last names off limit but I'm allowed to do first names?

Serialization doesn't mean they need a recurring antagonist, the season's plot could be about the crew, their relationships among each other, how their backstories affect them, how they deal with the new captain etc.

Except you need stakes, a challenge to overcome, a build up to a climax, which is what antagonist provides.

You are describing sub plots, rather then the main plot. Unless Discovery can deal with a natural disaster for 13 episodes, you need an antagonist. They do not have to appear in every episode, there could be an episode where they deal with natural disasters, but it would be fun to see a villain try to beat the Federation at their own game.

Pirates and ECS stuff. There are smugglers, there is still the ECS and Vulcan traders. Has to be pirates. Come on, let discovery chase em down for a couple of episodes.

Betcha Mudd could do awesome things falling in with some of them Orions

I know, different time and differemt place but TNG did quite well without a main protagonist. Honestly if the Orvill didn't have the krill it would be just as fine of a show, in fact the Krill episodes were my least favorite
