Plus in times of war you might be prepared to overlook some things. Such as a rather less than stellar Academy record.

Calling it less than stellar is like saying The Beatles were sort of popular.

It's not like he had a beer in his room or put eyeblack on a pair of officers binoculars. He was participating in a highly dangerous maneuver that had been banned because the last time it was tried all the cadets were killed. While practicing it, surprise, a cadet was killed. He then participates in a cover that makes the one that died look like it was his own incompetence, basically lies to his superiors and only when Picard figures it out and says you tell the truth or I will does he fess up.

I don't know how Starfleet academy works but in real life all four would be tossed immediately and possibly brought up for a court marshal for negligent homicide.

I know what I'm talking about too. I had a good friend who was finishing up his 3rd year at the AF academy. Great student stellar record. Smuggled his girlfriend into his room and got caught....boom gone. Two others who knew but didn't report it.....gone.
Last I heard he was an assistant manager at Target.

I might be wrong but I think Weaton filmed more scenes for NEM but they ended up on the cutting room floor.

Indeed, although those scenes don't really explain how he's back, why he isn't a Traveller anymore or why he's back in Starfleet. Just that he'll be serving with Riker on the Titan.

So, Wesley's gone from being hated for being a perfect wunderkid to being hated because he wasn't perfect after all.

Whilst we might disagree with his punishment, he along with his squad mates were punished for those events. It also seems as if starfleet failed to learn the lessons about the incident as well, i.e. Red Squad.

Yes, he appears further in the deleted scenes (bonus DVD of the two disc set), though I don't remember if he actually speaks. Since he plays no part in the plot it was probably an easy part to cut. And it's not like there was any great demand for more Wesley. Saying he should have had a bigger role in NEM is just perverse.

I think it's more accurate to say Wesley went from being hated in the early seasons because his character sucked. To being hated in the later seasons because his character still sucked.

Apparently the novels made it even weirder. One of the novels say he was in uniform because he showed up at the wedding naked, thinking it was Betazoid wedding. (Wiki)

I thought it was a Troll article, but it seems to be the truth.

I think one reason for all the fan bashing is that they let him be the main pilot. Just like that, a 16 year old kid with no training is piloting a large Starfleet vessel.

And he was also being touted as a special and more advanced super kid.

Generally, fans don't like certain characters getting too much attention

I remember that, the novel in question is A Time for War, A Time for Peace from 2004. Basically Wesley is still a Traveller, but as you said somehow got confused into thinking the wedding ceremony a traditional Betazoid one despite being on Earth and showed up naked. Picard then contacted the Enterprise asking for a dress uniform be sent down, and whoever he was talking to said the only one they had available had Lieutenant's pips on it. I don't know why they didn't spend ten seconds to remove the pips.

And ignoring the fact that Wesley (In the deleted scene) stated that he had a spot on the Titan as an engineer. He would have had a uniform anyway.

Here is the deleted scene just to show how odd it comes off.

He's acting like the old teenage Wesley, as if nothing ever happened. Never mind that he himself insisted Starfleet wasn't for him.

The novels can be really good though. Cardassia Iron and Ash is a really good read.

It's based on a DS9 episode about the orphan Cardassians on Bajor, what some might consider one of the "boring episodes".

It stays loyal to the story and the characters, and expands on them taking them through all those years up to the of the end of the Dominion War.

Yeah, but the novels decided not to acknowledge stuff from the deleted scenes in Nemesis. So Wesley is still a Traveller, Worf is now the Enterprise's XO and Commander Martin Madden doesn't exist. Or more accurately doesn't serve in Starfleet. Another novel (Q&A) features the Enterprise encountering another Enterprise E from an alternate timeline in which Commander Madden is the XO, but according to the database on the Prime E, there is no one named Martin Madden serving in Starfleet.
