Who is Richard?

Probably.

It wasn't any real theory or line of serious thought. Just threw it out there in response to something someone else said.

Also, how often has Smokey let anyone live? Just Locke, that we know of, right?

Smokey let all the mercenaries live at the end of season 4. No idea why, since they had just killed Alex and tons of other people, but for whatever reason it didn't kill any of them.

I guess that kind of shows us that Smokey is working against the Others, since it didn't kill the people trying to kill them.

I think Richard is what Mola Ram was in "Temple of Doom".

I think like some High Priest that worships as is the right hand of whatever entity Jacob/the Island is. I think he is responsable for the well being and upholding the laws/will of the island.

The odd thing most seem to miss is, the Others are always dressed in rags & dirty looking. Richard is the only one in clean fresh clothes in the middle of a jungle. There is never any dirt on him, not even sweat.

That's because hes really more like Jeff Probst on Survivor! We were just watching something on survivor, and Richard just has this Jeff Probst vibe about him...

Also -- some have commented that they don't like how he & Ben seemed to have lose their power/coolness....but i personally think it's intersting that those who should have power, are rally only slightly less clueless than everyone else. That even if most think they should revel in their "special knowledge"...they really aren't that different than other people.

Richard being makes sense, especially if they are speaking Latin to each other. If they spoke ancient Egyptian or something then maybe his history is older, but it looks like he is around 400 year old.
What makes you think that? Four hundred years ago latin was a language that died about a thousand yearss before that (despite Dante referring to his own Florentine tongue as "latin").

Then again, Latin seems to be a language all the Others speak, so you may well be right.

I didn't like how clueless Richard seemed to get and how Locke seemed far more "in the know" than any of them, but I'm satisfied that the season finale explained it all.
