Who and what do you want to become starship names?

    I'm honored, thank you! :)

Actually, this is one of my favorite Voyager episodes. If I'd had the say over Seven's post-Endgame life, I'd have had her recruited by the DTI and given her a series of her own.

In the vein of names that suggest a quality (like the Reliant or the Valiant), I've long liked the Endurant.

Lots of Ancient Greeks get mentioned (as a Greek myself, I'm not complaining), but they're mostly men. So I like the Antigone (an-TI-gu-nee), after the character from Sophocles's Oedipus trilogy. I've had a nerd crush on the civilly-disobedient heroine since my high school humanities class.

The Shran or Andoria might be good to reaffirm the multi-species Federation. I love the Gorkon, Surak, and T'Plana-Hath.

Give me one named after the Tellarite Socrates, the Betazoid Alexander, the Tiburonian Bach, or the Bolian Bon Jovi. While we're at it, what's the Deltan word for tolerance, the Aurelian mythical flying lost city of Avalon, or the Medusan Medusa?

I'd also like more names of "historical" figures from our future. Who was the[/a] leading mind of the 22nd century? What was the name of the first, and finest, Secretary General of the New United Nations?

I like tend to like themes for ship names too. For example, for clipper ships (designed for speed) names that suggest speed (e.g. Hermes, Mercury, Chase, Swift, Comet, Shooting Star, Marathon, etc).

For its part, Star Trek Online non-canonically included Wells-class timeships named U.S.S. Pastak, U.S.S. Poh, and U.S.S. Tempus. Star Trek: Coda - Moments Asunder copied the U.S.S. Tempus and also introduced U.S.S. Mobius after August Ferdinand Möbius of Möbius strip fame, U.S.S. Haddix after novelist Margaret Haddix, and U.S.S. Crichton after novelist Michael Crichton.

I loved the old FASA TNG Officer's Manual, that had ships named for every TOS character ever. USS Peter Preston etc (although Picard would canonize ships named for the TOS crew)

In my fanart I like going back to my old ship names that I made up when I was a kid, a whole bunch of them using made up words which I use for alien ship names. I think Trek doesn't use alien ship names enough, like it's worried that the ships have to be named only after aliens that we've seen on screen like Shran or Nog or Sarek and you can't just make something up.
I think a U.S.S. Kumari would be cool.
More ships from Oceania. U.S.S. Arafura.

Not a fan of newer series, or were you merely not apprised? DIS 1.02 introduced the Magee-class U.S.S. Shran (NCC-1413), destroyed in 2256, and PIC 3.01 introduced the Reliant-class U.S.S. Thy'lek Shran, active in 2401.

I appreciated how PIC 3.09 introduced the Sovereign-class U.S.S. Jaresh-Inyo (NCC-75020) named after the Grazerite Federation President from DS9 4.11.

I wish the same could be said for T'Maran, Avaranthi sh'Rothress, Madza Bral, Chab jab Lorg, Thelianaresth th'Vorothishria, T'Pragh, Amitra, Min Zife, and Kellessar zh'Tarash from the novels.
Indeed. I would love a Tokyo-class including the likes of the Shinjuku, Shibuya, Chiyoda, etc.

I also want everyone involved in the July 20 Plot (to assassinate Hitler) to have a ship named after them. Here is a breakdown.

    CAPTAIN (urgently, with increasing panic)
BS, beam me up! BS! BS, beam me up NOW! BS!

    TRANSPORTER CHIEF
    You think he's serious?

    FIRST OFFICER
Sounds like a lotta BS to me.

CAPTAIN (screaming as he dies horribly)
    AAUUGH!

Why not some names we know nothing about, names we've never heard?
There's more to Star Trek history than just what we know now.
I have to think there will be plenty of history in the next 200-300 years before we get to Star Trek time.
They should have legendary people and places and things in their history (that haven't happened for us yet).

I understand where you're coming from, but the reason why there are so many ships with historical names we do know now is to give audiences something to relate to. For some or even many of us, we do have to do a little digging to discover the historical relevance of names like Crossfield, Farragut, Biko, and Essex (just to name a few), but having an actual history that currently exists gives those names a bit more weight and substance behind them, IMO. Sure, we can have ships with names derived after the Federation was formed like Untaari, Iyskarat, Zhikaa, and Thyoi but it would be basically made-up gibberish (like those four names I just came up with).

I'm working up an explorer kitbash named Ballard, after the ocean explorer. Might as well name an exploring ship after an exploring guy!

Right on. Just once in a while, sure, throw in a U.S.S. Zhikaa and U.S.S. Thyoi. In a small way, it would open up the ST universe, hinting at the legends of who/what Thyoi was.

There is a small example of this in TNG with the U.S.S. Gorkon.
We don't have any knowledge or history of Gorkon (in our real history) but in TNG time, he was an historic figure.

That is my misgiving about the decorated captains list in DIS 1.05; it's way too short! You can't tell me nobody in Starfleet was prominent for over half a century between Jonathan Archer and Robert April!

    https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Robert_April#Awards_and_honors

What about how TOS 1.09 mentioned fictional tyrants named Ferris and Maltuvis on par with Julius Caesar and Chinggis Khan? What about how VOY 2.23 mentioned a never-seen Romulan officer named Chulak on par with Napoleon Bonaparte?
