Which Trek Publication Had The Best Cover Art?

Dayton3

Admiral
I consider myself a person who enjoys good cover art regardless of content. Novels, magazines, rpgs, comics whatever.

Which Trek publications do people here think had the best cover art?

I remember the two novels "Tooth and Claw" and "Diplomatic Implausibility" that I found to be fascinating.

Others such as

"Vendetta"

"The Klingon Gambit"

"Trek To Madworld" the cover of which shows the original Enterprise with an entirely new capabilty.

I love Twist of Faith (especially the Avatar book 2 side) and the cover for Warpath- me saying that means more than at first glance because I hate the colour orange. I really do... don't know why.

I remember seeing the Vanguard: Harbinger covers as a large blow-up placard at Shore Leave that year. That was a gorgeous piece of artwork...

Both those paintings were by the same artist: Sonia Hillios. I loved the latter cover so much (it was my first Trek novel) that I bought the painting from Sonia, and it hangs proudly in our living room.

IIRC, the first winner of the PsiPhi Award for best cover art was the Reeves-Stevens' Federation. So simple, and yet so classy.

Black Fire is still one of my all-time favorites. It may just be that I love the color green, and it's used very effectively on that cover.

I think all of the Vanguard covers are fantastic. They hark back to some of the best of the Bantam covers, like Trek to Madworld, Planet of Judgment, and the Blish adaptations (especially 4 and 10). The TOS New Earth Miniseries had great covers, too, as did the Stargazer series.

And being a Spock fan, I'm kind of blown away by the cover of the upcoming Troublesome Minds.

There are lots of other great ones, but I'd still have to list Black Fire at the top.

I'm going to make a pitch for one of the unsung Star Trek cover artists -- Mike Collins. His cover for Ring Around the Sky was perfect; it so captured the sensawunder I hoped for. I also loved his cover for Fables of the Prime Directive, and his Slings & Arrows covers were all top-notch as well. (I was particularly fond of the cover for Terri's entry in the series, whose title I am completely blanking on at the moment.)

I can't believe nobody's mentioned the Terok Nor series yet. Man, that is amazing, especially when you lay all three together!

Yes!

Mike Collins definitely deserves his share of accolades. I've loved all of the covers he did for the S.C.E. installments Kevin and I wrote, with the trio of covers for the original Foundations books being particular favorites. Mike was even so kind as to send Kevin and me autographed prints of the three covers laid side-by-side, which I still need to have framed for my office :)

As for other art, other favorites that come to mind are the original covers for #4, 5, 6, and 8 of the Blish adaptations. I just love that blend of Trek and old-school SF cover art.

I loved Mike's work, and it got progressively better as time went on. I loved what he did with both Mere Anarchy and Slings and Arrows (Allyn, Terri's entry was That Sleep of Death, and it had Crusher, the EMH, and the production of A Christmas Carol on the cover), and in particular his covers for Age of Unreason, Balance of Nature, Ring Around the Sky, Orphans, Failsafe, Spin, Identity Crisis, Fables of the Prime Directive, Honor, Distant Early Warning, Turn the Page, Troubleshooting, The Light, Remembrance of Things Past, and especially the Warholesque 10 is Better than 01 were magnificent.

I also have soft spots for the covers to A Burning House, Articles of the Federation, Tales of the Dominion War, and, of course, Diplomatic Implausibility.

I also like the Tales from the Captain's Table the way it looks when blown up on a big-ass foam-core board. That's a cover that needs to be big to be most effective.

And I have yet to dislike a John Picacio cover.

Wow, this is hard, there have been alot of covers that I have really liked since I started getting Trek books. I know there were some good ones before, but of the ones I've seen almost all of my favorites have been released since I started reading Trek (2003-05 range). I'll look through them after I get off work tomarrow, and post my picks.

There are a few I'd purchase as art...let me take a look at the shelf:

Harbinger, Sword of Damocles, Immortal Coil, Case of the Colonist's Corpse, Federation, Constellations, Tales of the Dominion War, Articles of the Federation...

Oh, man, how could I forget The Case of the Colonist's Corpse? Best cover EVAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
