Which Trek Games Are Best in Starship Combat?

Dayton3

Admiral
I'm interested in getting a ST computer game that focuses primarily on starship combat from the Federation point of view.

Can anyone tell me which is best?

And are there any good Trek games that will play on a Nintendo DS?

Oddly enough, the game that did starship combat best is, IMHO, A Final Unity. It really captured the tactics of managing individual systems, diverting power and frantically trying to get systems repaired before your opponent recovers.

Try the Starfleet Command series..esp Starfleet Command 2 and Starfleet Command Orion Pirates..systems management..energy allocation repairs and battle damage modelling is quite precise.

How about Star Trek Legacy?
I would not even bother unless the game was in the bargin bin. The other games mentioned are much better than Legacy.

There are a few mods such as The Ultimate Universe that *almost* save Legacy but it's nothing like it was hyped up to be. The game promised next-gen full realistic 3d combat and we basically got that 3d view mode from armada 2 with decent but not groundbreaking texturing. The same issues that Armada 2 had with it not being fully 3d and ships can only go up and down so far are true with Legacy as well due to it being built on the same engine with much of the same base code. It didn't help that about 25% of the missions were cut due to budget and the developers abandoned the game after release basically.

That being said I find it (modded) a fun little arcade game but you have to know it enough to be be able to play with its controls and know what you can't do like rolls or flips or anything you would expect in a 3d environment.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Bridge Commander. Straight from the CD its pretty lame, but a fully fan modded version of it (with mods from www.bcfiles.com) its a whole new game, and one of the best starship combat simulators available in my opinion. You can either act as the captain and from a bridge view, give out orders to your crew, or you can take manual control of ship flight and tactical operations

I've contributed to the game with my custom damage textures. Here's an example of the graphics the game is capable with the fan made mods.

I'll give a second vote for Starfleet Command: Orion Pirates. The next one, which is set in the TNG era, isn't a bad game, but it looses its challenge after a while... you reach a certain starship level, and you are unstoppable. Orion Pirates doesn't suffer from this problem.
How about Star Trek Legacy?
I personally don't think it's as bad of a game as it's made out to be. However, the single player skirmish needs some real work. You can't pick your enemy, so you can't really set up unique match-ups. The computer will pick the best ships it can get for its money.

For Starship combat itself, it's Bridge Commander. The mods for it are excellent, though getting them up and running is a bit obtuse. After several hours of installing and re-installing I had to give up on the BC mods. The interface wasn't quite there and you couldn't scroll down in the options, very frustrating. Single player game is fairly well balanced and fun. By comparison, Legacy is more of a submarine simulator in space, much simpler, but with game and mission design that will make you want to take the DVD out and hurl it at a high velocity against the wall.

I know about the scrolling problem you had and there has been a fix released for that.

ST:BC hands down. Best Trek space simulator to date. Legacy is a piece of crap, compared to BC.

I agree. BC still rocks even being 6 years old. Some of the mods are amazing.

I've been trying to tweak some of the scripts in my game, mostly to increase ship speed and shorten torpedo load times, and haven't had any luck. It's quite the pain. So I really appreciate the work these modders have put into this game over the years.

Bridge Commander as the mods are great.

But I'd also go for Klingon Academy as IMO the ship damage effects are much prettier. :)

Agreed, recently when I checked my programs and found it hadn't been run since before last Xmas (Legacy) I found myself with 4 gigs of free space. [Click > Delete!]

Bridge Commander? Used - frequently . Be sure and try the MVAM mods with the Galaxy-class saucer seperation!

Well I just released my newest set of damage textures for BC yesterday...maybe they look prettier than the stock ones to you? ;)

I've been using your version 1.0 textures since their release. They're awesome. :techman:

Thanks! Version 1.1 uses the same basic texture but I've crammed more detail in there for a more random look (nothing ruins a damage texture more than uniformity) and some electrical sparking and plasma ruptures. I think you'll like it :)

I like your new textures - will give them a shot when I get back home later on.

The reason I like KA's battle damages are because they show the details of the decking which reminds me of the destroyed Enterprise in ST3:TSFS.

Here are some screencaps I took or was given (I can't remember now!) ages ago:

VERY pretty considering the age of the game - I like the mods in this game too.
