Which Starship name would you choose?

Captain Tracy

Commander
Red Shirt
Selected for Captaincy in the newly formed "Galaxy Exploration Division" of SFC, and utilizing the brand new 'Constitution Class Heavy Cruisers', if you could select, from a standardized list, the name given to the ship you would be commanding on a 5 year mission, which name would you choose?

  • Constellation
  • Republic
  • Intrepid
  • Excalibur
  • Exeter
  • Constitution
  • Farragut
  • Yorktown
  • Hood
  • Lexington
  • Potemkin
  • Defiant
  • Kongo
Sorry, but you can't select 'Enterprise', as that was taken by a Captain James T. Kirk, who was first in line; you are second in line.

I'll take the Constellation, please. The 19th century USS Constellation is docked here in Baltimore, so it seems appropriate.

None of the above. My choice would be Indomitable.

But if forced to pick from the list I guess Defiant would do.

Excalibur, because I'm a fan of King Arthur. All my shuttles would be named after the knights of the Round Table.

My first choice would be the USS Farragut, named for Adm David Glasgow Farragut, senior Union Naval Officer during the US Civil War and the first ever Rear-Admiral, Vice-Admiral and full Admiral in the US Navy.

Lexington. First engagement of the American Revolution and the carriers Lexington accorded themselves well during WWII.

I'll take the Republic. Training cruises with cadets around the solar system is just fine for me, plus I'll be able to weed out the numbskulls before they can get out there and cause any real damage.

I’d want either Challenger or Columbia.

If I have to pick from the list, I’ll go with Constitution. It’s resembling Challenger and Columbia more and more all the time.

Anything but Defiant. That one could be awkward in a first-contact situation. ("So, you say you represent a peaceful organization of interstellar harmony and coexistence. Excellent! Tell us, what is your fine vessel called?" "Er, well...")

ETA: Unless maybe this is an altered timeline and now we're the crew that first meets the Klingons. They'd probably take it as a favorable first impression.

Excalibur.

If choosing from other possible names:

Sydney (In the Royal Australian Navy's history, the name of HMAS Sydney comes up a heckuva lot.)

Vampire, Vendetta or Voyager ( :D ) (As above)

Australia ( ;) )

Bonaventure (mentioned in TAS's 'Time Trap - and I just really like the name)

Endeavour (for Captain James Cook)

Resolution or Adventure (also for Cook)

Wind Rode, Utmost (fictional RAN ships)

Warspite, Ark Royal, Swiftsure, Seeadler, Nautilus, Jervis Bay (for the naval historian in me)

If I had to choose from the list, I would say the Kongo. If I could have my own, it would be the USS Goose Bay (named after the Kingston-class coastal defense vessel) and I would have Ensign Jean-Marie Mackenzie promoted to Lt. Cmdr so that he could be my first officer.
