Which Species Was Underused in DS9?

Which species do you think was underused, could have been explored or used in DS9?

My vote is for the Bolian :bolian:

Andorian, since they didn't appear at all as far as I remember.

DS9 did a good job of fleshing out it's regular aliens though. I wouldn't say it needed to do anything extra.

The Tzenkethi. They were extremely close to Bajoran and Cardassian space and was likely close to the Dominion War and yet we get one measly episode about them and we dont even get to see them.
In the poll I voted Tholian, I love Tholians and they're a powerful race and should have had episodes of their own like the Breen did. I would have loved to have seen a Dominion Dreadnought trapped in a Tholian web. ;)

BTW, what the hell are Tail-Heads?

I voted for Tholians. There were a couple of mentions of them during the series. The Fed seemed to be able to have peaceful interactions. The CG techniques maybe were not up to snuff while the show was on the air, but it would have been great to have a kind of running gag where various members of the cast are having dealings with Tholians, but we never quite get to see one. Sort of like Morn always yakking but never whilst on camera.

Otherwise, my second vote, the Tzenkethi. It would have been fantastic if they had looked EXACTLY like the Kzinti in TAS, but always be sure to call them the Tzenkethi !

jeees I dunno. Like was mentioned already I too like DS9 the way it was. I would like to say that I missed the Vulcans but I didn't really.

I suppose in the spirit of the OP's request I would have liked to seen at least one zencathy(sp) episode since Worf was going to exile himself there he got me curious about them.

(hummm but then again with excellent characters like Weyoon, Kai Winn, Garak and the great Gul Dukat...who needs the zencathy)

No, he wanted to join the Nyberrite, not the Tzenkethi.

I voted El Aurien since DS9 was basically our last chance to ever get to know them... alas... we didn't.
But there was an El-Aurian on DS9! It was Martus Mazur in second season's "Rivals". And why exactly was DS9 the last chance to see them? It was repeatedly stated that the El-Aurians are spread over the galaxy. So they could very well be part of a VOY episode. Hell, even ENT could have shown an El-Aurian (all canon issues aside).

My first runner up would have been the Andorians. We never saw them, and they were always one of my favorite alien races on Trek. Also, the Tholians would have been interesting.
I voted for Tosk/Hunters. I know it was proposed to have them be featured as part of the Dominion. That would have been a great bit of continuity, and would have created some incredible story ideas.

I voted Breen, mostly because they were major players in the area, yet we saw little of them until they allied with the Dominion.

I voted Tosk. My criterion, naturally, being: Is there something interesting with this species that might be touched on further?

The Breen were a one-trick pony and IMHO were played for all they're worth. The Vorta were not more than a bureaucratic class; but in Weyoun they found their apotheosis. Bolians, Grazerites, Tail-Heads are essentially just interesting make-up jobs, there's nothing about them that really constitutes an interesting idea, so these were also played for all they were worth. There's a little more to Benzites, but this had already been tackled in TNG; and the Vulcans actually got more guest appearances on DS9 than any other show. Tholians, Andorians, Tellarites and Orions* were not DS9 races at all; only being referred to in dialogue but never appearing onscreen. I think we got more than enough - actually, a bit too much - of the Betazoids with Lwaxana Troi. And as far as El-Aurians go I could have done without Martus Mazur.

That leaves the Tosk, who were an intersting idea. We could have seen more of the Hunter/Tosk society and their backstory, and the suggested Hunter involvement in the Dominion and the source of the technology for the Jem'Hadar. There's the germ of a story in there that might have been interesting to explore.

*The Orion Syndicate were seen and the subject of the episode "Honor Among Thieves", but none of the members of the Syndicate in this episode were of the Orion species.

The Breen remain an intriguing, mysterious power to the very end. Come to think of it, that may be a good thing.

Tholians next, but being non-humanoid, and extremely xenophobic, they would never take sides in a war. Still it would have been interesting to develop a storyline that saw them entertaining a notion of protecting their interests in the AQ.

That's xenophobic. :D

As soon as Way of the Warrior rolled around, there was so much focus on the Klingons episode after episode, it's no wonder that so many other species were ignored! I quite enjoyed Worf being in the series, but doing all those Klingon-centred episodes grated, particularly as apart from the standout ones like Apocalypse Rising, most were pretty dire.

Tosk, Andorians, Vulcans, Vorta. Breen. All under-used. Vorta got very fleshed-out but even so, they could & should have been used more since Weyoun was awesome and always fascinating in every single scene he had. Could have showed Weyoun doing the nitty gritty duties of his job like going to the homeworld and wooing the Breen, getting non-aggression pacts signed etc. etc.

I'm glad the Betazoids were limited to the abysmally awful Lwaxana Troi episodes (every one of her scenes her was completely unwatchable and most of those episodes completely pointless, agonizing to watch, and always worth skipping; except for Odo being in them and making them semi-watchable due to RA's outstanding acting). Even that was way too much Betazoids. Could have used way less of her and her Betazoids on DS9.

The breen were more of a monster/plot device than anything. They didn't even have speech that the audience could understand so it would be difficult to do more with them.

1. Breen-despite the fact the Breen were supposed to be mysterious I think it was a mistake not to flesh them out a little bit more. I think a few more appearances or mentions prior to their joining the Dominion might've done the job without revealing all that much about them. (For example, a show like ENT's "Minefield", except replace the Romulans with the Breen. Or more shows like the one where Dukat and Kira joined forces to stop Breen slavers)
2. Hunters-after reading about the intended use of the Hunters as part of the Dominion, I think it was a missed opportunity. The Hunters could've added another layer to the Dominion, perhaps a race that is powerful (unlike those traders-can't remember their names), yet the Feds might be able to reason with them.
3. Tzenkethi-I definitely wanted to see these guys after "Adversary". It was a throwaway line that I wish had some resolution. Just one Tzenkehti ship visiting the station and it causing Sisko to relive the war would've worked for me.

Also I think DS9 would've benefitted from seeing the Orions since the Syndicate played a role in several episodes, and the Tholians. Also throw in the Andorians and the Gorn, partly because TNG didn't feature them and it would've been good to see them again.

The Bajorans in the later seasons. You got alot of Kira stories or she played a important role in the series but they did very few Bajoran poltics stories or what bothers me most they didn't allow them to play a major role in the Dominion War,especially compared to what the Carddisians were doing in that storyline.

I never considered the Andorians to be a major species before Enterprise. They were basically aliens of the week to me. It would have been cool to see the Tosk and the Hunters again.

I voted Tosk.

The TOS/TNG aliens were just fine on those shows, but personally, I'm glad DS9 had their own alien races - the Jem'Hadar, the Vorta and the Founders (plus a few other GQ races). The Cardassians, Bajorans, Ferengi, and Klingons were enough overlap. We didn't need any more.

Tosk was an interesting alien, and we only saw them once. I think they could have done alot more with Tosk.
