Which of these statements wold you consider "blasphemous"?

Since the concepts of "best" and "worst" are entirely subjective, and therefore completely meaningless: No, I don't think any of those statements are out of line.

Or disagree with. Basically bucking the trend with fan favourites...

- The Empire Strikes Back is not the best Star Wars movie.

Disagree. The Battle of Hoth makes it the best movie of the series.

- Alien 3 is not the worst Alien movie.

Truth. The worst would be "Alien Resurrection".

- The Wrath of Khan is not the best Star Trek movie.

Blasphemy! Thou shalt burn in Rura Penthe!

Personally I agree with all of the above.

Everybody's entitled to an opinion.

If I wanted to hear harsh language, I would state this opinion (which I do happen to have):

"I like the SW Special Editions AND the prequel trilogy".

:rommie: Well, it's not hard to understand why people react badly to being characterized as idiots.

I was joking a bit, but it would be nice if people could be more objective.

That's why I like the phrase "guilty pleasure' because you're admitting that what you like may not defensible but you still like it.

^ Why should anything have to be defensible? If you like something (or not), then that is solely your own business, and should not have to justify this to anyone. Remember what I said about subjective opinions. ;)

What I mean is sort of where you know many others don't like it and you know where they're coming from.

Like black licorice. I love it, but can see how others wouldn't.

I'll just trot out my standard blasphemy.

There is no such thing as "underrated" or "overrated." Everything is just as good as people think it is, because our experience thereof is mediated through our own bodies.

So when we talk about how "good" or "bad" or "better" or "worse" something is, all we're really talking about is ourselves and our own reactions--not some intrinsic merit or demerit of the work in question.

So, interpreted properly, the following statements (for example) are both (at least potentially) true:

"Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus was the worst movie ever made"

"Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus was the best movie ever made."

There is no contradiction between the two because they're describing two different things: namely, two different people's responses to the film.

And when we criticize something that other people enjoy, we are essentially criticizing them for being different people, and enjoying different things. Thus, it is entirely appropriate to take such criticism personally, since that's what it is: personal criticism.

If someone dislikes a movie you like, then they dislike the person you are. If they say it's a bad movie, then they're saying that you're a bad (or at least inferior) person. Respond appropriately.

Well, this is not exactly true. There ARE intrinsic merits to works of creativity/art that make them better or worse than other works. "I like this movie the best" is much different than saying "this is the best movie".

I would argue, however, that these merits are much more subjective than many fanboys like to believe. In reality, there is not much different in the quality (instrinsic merits) of most of the Star Wars OT or the Star Trek series or most of the Alien series. Alien 3 is not that much different in quality than the first two, for example.

So, although I could say that Alien Backyard Splash made by my 10 year old son on his camera is intrinsically worse than Alien 3 I can't really say that Alien 3 is intrinsically worse than Aliens.

This idea that we can justify any opinion by saying I Like or I Feel in front of it is just wrong.

If I like it, I like it. There's no reason to be abject about one's preferences in terms of popular culture - the very best of it being produced is nowhere near as good as its strongest proponents claim.

The remastering of the original Star Trek by replacing the old special effects and music with new material was awesome/whoever came up with the idea should be fed to a Horta.

Depending who is in the room with you at the time, one side or the other of that slash will either get you cheered or thrown bodily from the premises.

I honestly think it was great and should have been the model for Lucas to use. The Star Trek remastered/redone effects series simply cleaned up flaws/outdated elements of the original without modifying/altering any of the original stories. AND one can still watch the originals if one wants.
