Which Novels to Read?

Malformed

Sometimes I long for a good Doctor Who story beyond the television but I am overwhelmed by the sheer amount of Doctor Who novels out there, especially the rebooted series.

I'm not looking for great literature, just good read that sounds like the characters I love and is better written than the average Terrance Dicks novelization (though as a kid I loved them, but I had access to little else).

I thoroughly enjoyed Shada, but, what's next??? And, if you don't mind I'd love to hear what it was you liked about your recommendations.

Thanks!

Well, among ones which have been published or re-printed since 2005:

Judgement of the Judoon (Tenth Doctor)
The Taking of Chelsea 426 (Tenth Doctor)
The Silent Stars Go By (Eleventh Doctor)
Harvest of Time (Third Doctor)
Dreams of Empire (Second Doctor)
Last of the Gaderene (Third Doctor)

These stand out as being the ones most memorable to me. And although it hasn't been published yet, I'm looking forward to the upcoming War Doctor novel The Engines of War.

From the last few years, I really liked Jenny Colgan's Dark Horizons. It's the eleventh Doctors and Vikings. I'd definitely recommend that. :)

Silent Stars Go By was pretty good. It's basically the Eleventh with Amy and Rory vs. the Ice Warriors, and somewhat better than last year's episode featuring one of them.

Lungbarrow's sort of hard to find, at least in print. There was an Ebook posted on Doctor Who's official website way back before the new series started but I'm not sure if it's still around.

Lungbarrow I think was considered for production for the TV series, but I think the series was cancelled before it went into production. Either that or it was seen as too ambitious and part of it ended up as Ghost Light (Which has a similar sort of 'haunted house' atmosphere).

As noted, a few of the 90's novels have been reprinted for the 50th anniversary collection and the recently released Monster collection.

Yep, Lungbarrow is basically a write-up of the original idea for Ghost Light, instead of Ace's worst place, it was the Doctor's, his family home. It's rare because it was one of the last books before Virgin's licence ran out; a y copies left over when their Dr Who licence expired would have to be recalled, so the print run was cut to the sure-fire first month sales.

Yeah, that also explains why the first Eighth Doctor novel, The Dying Days, is also very rare in print form. Some of the earlier BBC novels are also hard to find.

Dreams of Empire and The Wheel of Ice (2nd Doctor)
Ten Little Aliens (1st Doctor)

I'd recommend the novelisation of Remembrance of the Daleks. It takes a great story and makes it even better. The Dalek POV's are especially good.
