Which DVD's?

I am about to finish the TOS DVDs and want to buy all the movies at once.

Should I wait for Blue Ray or just pick up DVD's?..... since they will still play on the BR machine....which I will buy next year.

If DVD's - which set is best?

Movies 1-6 (but this set only has Star Trek 1 with 2 discs, Star Trek 2-6 are the 1 disc versions)

I say get it now since who knows how long it will take for all the blu-ray versions to be released.

Check out this set it has Star Trek 1-6 Special Editions: http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Ori..._bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1229485453&sr=8-2

Make sure you get the thick, silver cases for each DVD. The 2nd disc special features won't disappoint. TWOK has interviews with the actors from the early 80s -- weird seeing them so young! and Nimoy is wearing a white suit with pink pin stripes! The Nemesis dvd disc 2 contains deleted scenes of Wesley Crusher -- apparently on leave from Traveling.

Although, I think the TUC Blu-ray will have a special bonus feature including Klingons acting out the scenes in Hamlet that are quoted throughout the movie

"You haven't experienced Shakespeare until you've heard it in the original Klingon!"

what does he mean by "original Klingon" ??? i'm pretty sure shakespeare was human

I wonder if this bonus feature will feature Klingons with huge, TNG/Enterprise foreheads or the calmer forheads from TUC?

This makes it seem like the first 6 movies will be released on Blu-ray fairly soon

I guess my concern is picture/transfer quality more than extras or whatever.
I just want it to look good............

Well if it helps at all the picture quality of the Special Edition DVDs is great. But obviously it would not be as good as the Blu-Ray version will be. It all depends how long you are willing to wait and how much you are willing to pay (probably you could get all 10 SE Trek movies for the price of 3 or 4 blu-ray ones)

Considering the limitations of original LoDeff filming I don't really think BR will be any better.

I will seek out the 10 movies - Special Edition DVDs. I have the upgraded style DVD player and 720p projector.

What about the TV shows? Heard some DVDs really suck.

What? The movies were photographed on 35mm film, the grain structure of which has a vastly higher resolution than any HDTV mode including 1080p. ST:TWOK's dreadful cinematography aside, presenting them on Blu-ray Disc isn't a problem as long as the film is digitally telecined at 2K/4K resolution.

Star Trek and Star Trek: Enterprise both look really good on DVD. The quality on the other series is inconsistent, due to being done on video-tape.

Your 'main concern' is picture quality and you're not sure if you want to wait 4 months for the Blu-ray version???

And you've already decided to buy a Blu-ray player???

I'm pretty much speechless.

The TOS movies will be released to tie in with the new movie probably late April or very early May. Is that too long to wait?

They'll probably contain all the previous extras and a few more as well---not a super-duper loaded package, but that doesn't seem to matter to some folks anyway.

And once again with, "old movies shot on film won't look that good in HD...' ???? wow.

A lot of movies are STILL shot on film--too bad the makers don't realize they won't look very good on the Blu-ray release 4 months later.

Do we know for sure if they will all be released at once or will they slowly release the movies on blu-ray? I remember with the SE DVD's they did not release them all at once but rather one movie every 2 or 3 months. If thats what they do with the Blu Ray versions you will not be able to get all 10 movies on blu-ray for quite a long time.

But if picture quality is what the original poster is most concerned about than maybe the possible long wait to get all 10 movies will be worth it.

Film ..yes, but Paramount won't let me borrow it:rommie:

I mean that the quality of what is sold to us probably won't vary much from DVD to BR.

See above post.........why wait forever when it will look about the same?

So first you make a completely ill-informed comment on the 'lodef' limitatations of film and then try you and pretend you were just talking about Paramounts supposed lack of skill/or intent in making a proper transfer.........

Nice try---ain't buying it.
you didn't get it.

And yes, it's pretty much certain that Paramount will release a set of movies 1-6 at the time of the new movies' release.

It is tentatively being called the 'Kirk & Spock movie collection'---
perhaps to separate it from the TNG movies in which Kirk (but not Spock)appeared in Generations & of course, because the new movie will so hevily feature the origins of those two main characters.

Blu-rays are usually officially announced from 60 to 100 days before release. So we're looking at an early January to late February time-frame for the announcement. But being a high profile release/ tie-in it will likely be leaked fairly soon when the set will be released with more hints about the bonus content.
