Given one character had a whole movie to develop and the other had a character only develop for about 30 minutes, I think the choice is obvious.

I go with David's death. For one thing, it didn't make me say, "how in the hell did that happen?", like having someone fall to their death while in mid-transport and in the process of dematerializing!! Especially after having seen that very same transporter snatch two guys out of midair after they've already reached terminal velocity.

Hm, I'd say David's death upon further pondering. I'm actually watching III as I type this 
. We had time to get to know David, more than we knew Amanda (at least from the new movie). So him getting gutted and her falling to her death, he wins out. Though, I loved the expression on Spock's face once he materializes on the platform after her death. The best!
