Whey Protein Shakes

I know a ton of people here have much much more experience and knowledge about lifting and body building then I do, so I have this question for you guys.

I had to hit GNC the other day because I was running low on vitamins. And as usual I was hanging out talking to the guy about gym stuff. He's a cool guy and always pretty helpful with tips and stuff.

He never tries to push anything on me or sell me anything, but after talking for a while, he recommended I try some protein shake stuff to help me up my protein intake.

He told me to try out the cheap small bag of the stuff to see if I liked it and if it helped out at all.

So after a few days, I feel less sore in the hours after my workout and especially the next day.

But I don't know if it's from the shakes or some kind of placebo effect. So I come to you guys who probably know a lot more than I do about all of this.

Worth using? If anything I would think it's beneficial to get more protein since I have trouble getting it all from my diet.

To gain muscle you want to have at least 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight (if you weight 200 lbs, you should intake 200 grams of protein per day). Protein shakes are a godsend, as it can be very difficult to get enough protein through food alone.

I tend to use the more expensive stuff (ON Whey) because it digests a little more efficiently than the cheaper stuff, but it's all protein. I tend to have 1-2 60g shakes every day. I suffer if I don't.

Just a tip, though: GNC is expensive. There are a lot of good websites that sell supplements for a lot cheaper. I personally use bodybuilding.com and dpsnutrition.net.

That's awesome, bro, I can't thank you enough for how much you've helped me out with all my gym stuff.

I'm going to check out this sites now.

Optimum Nutrition's 100% Whey is inexpensive and about as good as any regular whey you can get. If you're looking to get bigger you might want a protein blend, blends combine whey with different types of protein in order to allow more of a shelf life in the stomach, and is often advertised as "time-released". Again ON'sPro Complex is considered one of the best. I'm a big fan of Rich Gaspari's products, they're more researched than most, and he has a new protein blend called Myofusion.

^Good call, RAMA. I actually made a lot more progress when I switched to the Pro Complex last year compared to when I was taking Whey alone.

A blend with Whey and Casein protein is usually a good bet. Whey digests quickly and will be used by your body immediately after your workout, while the casein will remain in your system longer. Casein is actually good to consume before bed so your muscles can still get protein throughout the night.

When my tub of Whey is done, I'm gonna switch back to Pro Complex. That was good shit.

Another important question I forgot to ask, will any of this adversely effect my efforts to lose weight?

The question shouldn't be about losing weight.. the question should be about losing excess bodyfat.

And the answer to the "right" question is "no, it won't". It will help.

As long as you are pushing yourself hard enough in the gym, probably not. The more you eat, the more your muscles will grow. The more muscle you have, the more fat you'll burn.

One thing I will say is avoid stepping on scales. You shouldn't be concerned with "losing weight," but rather you should think more about improving your body's shape and overall physique. Muscle is heavier than fat, so use the mirror to gauge your progress, not the scale.

Ya, I never use a scale, I use the mirror to gauge my progress. Cause ya, between dropping fat and gaining muscle there probably wouldn't be much a weight change on a scale.

Scales have only served to discourage me, never been a motivator.

I've always been skinny, so I sometimes use a scale in the hope that I am actually heavier! It rarely works out that way.

No, just don't use weight gainers. A regular whey will provide all the protein and amino acids you'll need and far less calories, usually 100-150 calories per serving vs 400 or more.

Also if you are lactose intolerant, you may want to use a protein isolate, which has less whey.

In addition to drinking protein shakes for building muscle, I find them great for when I'm in a rush or when I know I won't be able to eat anything for a few hours. Protein digests slowly and makes you feel full longer (so does fibre).

Protein is necessary for muscles to grow and for most people, it's almost impossible to eat enough during the day to support that growth. That is why protein shakes are so good - they're quick and easy compared to grilling a chicken breast or a piece of fish five times a day!

And contrary to some people's belief that since protein shakes are a supplement (supplementing your diet), that doesn't suddenly make it some steroid or something. Whey protein is simply the clear liquid that is removed from cheese ('curds and whey') and has the highest biological value of all proteins. Other proteins include casein which is also from cheese and milk and soy protein from soy beans. Protein shakes simply take that protein and put it into a powder with flavouring so that it's drinkable!

I wind up using protein as a MRPs 2-3 times a day..

I'd say the same, but I differ semantically.

I think of "meals" as breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Which for me is food.

Protein shakes (and or RTD shakes like Myoplex with about 300 calories) are my in-betweens, which I don't consider MRP's/"meal replacements".

DarkHelmet drinks 2 ghey protein shakes a day while watching Top Gun.

Time well spent.

Okay, so I got this Whey Protein powder. I mixed it in with some water (like it said on the box) and it tasted horrible! I couldn't choke it down. Any advice like ways to make it taste decent?
