Where Would You Live

If you weren't tied to a job or family, and could afford to go where you wanted? And why.

I would like to live in Europe for a year or so; partly to do family history, partly to visit fun and interesting places.

So I'd like to be in Ireland, anywhere between Dublin and Belfast, and close to London too. The husband and I really like France, so even though I've no ancestry there, I'd love to live there for a bit and become fluent in my French, which is rather lacking. I also loved Edinburgh, Scotland.

Then off to Germany, somewhere in the southern part so I could go to different record offices. Perhaps over towards Bavaria.

I'd do short trips to other countries just to visit - Scandinavia, Italy (Florence and Rome as I've been to Venice), perhaps Greece.

But if I had to pick one place, I guess I'd love somewhere in either the UK or Ireland. Or do two places - half a year there, and half in Germany.

But wait...what about Australia, Canada, Japan....so many places!

First choice: New York City
(because I love New York, and I also love baseball, and the Yankees & Mets are my favorite teams.)

Second choice: Toronto
(because it's my second favorite city of all time - I fell totally in love with Toronto when I was there this summer.)

I actually really love where I live so I wouldn't really want to move someplace else permanently. But I'd love to live in London for a while and probably New York. I like big cities and those two also have a reputation of being exciting.

As for travelling long and extensively, my first destination would be India. I'd also love to do a tour of Africa, especially South Africa but also Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and Senegal.

First choice:
Larkspur, California. It's where I grew up, right across the bay from San Francisco.. It really was the perfect place--beautiful, perfect weather, lots of activities, etc. It's far too expensive for me now.

England. If England would take me (which they wouldn't; I have nothing to offer) and if I could afford it, I would love to live there. I studied there for awhile when I was in school, and I really liked it. I wouldn't have to be in London--just close enough that I could there on a short train ride.

Quebec, Canada, or anywhere in France. I am especially enamoured with the French in particular, their culture, their language ... whathaveyou. I'm mostly Irish and no part French, that I'm aware of. I would probably emigrate, altogether, if money was no object and I wouldn't think twice about it.

If I didn't have to worry about money etc.. Perhaps a sub-trpocial island to get away from it all does appeal from time to time.

A smallish village in Scotland. I spent one of the best years of my life in Glasgow, and I am a small town girl, despite living in Boston for twenty years.

If money and health weren't an issue, I'd either move back to California, or aim big and move to England, but be well outside of London. Devon, perhaps, I think that's where my ancestor launched from.

I would also like to visit my ancestral homes of England, Holland, Germany. Especially, the historical records in England. In the military, I did the Pacific Rim tour between missions, but was never able to visit Europe, at the time.

I lived in Hawaii for five years from 2005 through 2009. I'd go back in a heartbeat if it wasn't so expensive.

I'd go full nerd and go to Japan. Naturally, I would visit all the cities, towns and wards in Tokyo, but I'd want to see where someone I used to know grew up. I might retrace some of the steps of Hokusai. See the things depicted in some way f his woodcuts. I'd sample the cuisine in every prefecture. Maybe take in a few seasonal festivals. I'd do every cliched tourist activity possible. After, I outlive my welcome, it's only a hop, skip, and a jump to Thailand. I'd go north and sit on a beach until my mind was Jell-o, not giving a damn about anything.

California, Santa Barbara in particular. When my Dad and I visited there about a year ago, I fell in love with it.

I've never been to Hawaii, but I figure it's the closest I'd ever be able to get to some South Pacific paradise since I don't have a passport.

I'd certainly stay in Britain for the moment, as the climate suits BobTheSkutter. Though the steady political move to the right might persuade me to move elsewhere if we didn't have to worry about what his health care would cost anywhere else.

I would choose a slightly bigger house, as my experience is that bigger places are easier to keep tidy, and we have a problem with untidiness (for which read BobTheSkutter is an untidy beggar) and one where we could either have a ground floor bedroom or room for a stair lift.

My dream house would be on top of a cliff, so it was above flood risk, but had a view of the sea so I could sit and watch the waves. It would have good, flat road access for BobTheSkutter, an open fire and then all the environmental stuff like solar panels to keep the bills down. A proper garage for my car, a good sized kitchen and a few extra rooms to keep all the Stuff that builds up. And I'd have enough income to not need to work so I could stay and look after my hubby every day.

Hawaii, near the north shore so I could watch the insane surfers, and Cornwall U.K. for a variety of reasons. Probably a 4/8 month split each year.

Japan. I am in love with the culture, the language (which is really, really hard), and while it would take some time to acclimate to such a shift in environment, I believe I would love it and adapt accordingly.

I genuinely couldn't live anywhere else. There are plenty of things I detest about my country but they're still far outweighed by the good stuff. It's home and where I am is the home-iest part of it.

Having stated the obvious, I'd very much like to go back to Ireland. See more of Scotland. Go to Wales. And then there's Canada....Hmmm...
