When you visit an earthquake-rattled city, you can expect...

I went up to Christchurch at the weekend as the Wiggles were playing and we treated our little girl to the live show (which rocked).

As you may know, Christchurch was hit by a 7.1 quake in September last year, which did damage but no loss of life.

Then in Feb this year a 6.3 quake tore through the city, bringing down buildings and killing over 160 people.

As a gesture of good will the Wiggles decided to continue playing there, and donated any remaining unsold tickets to be 'free' to the chrildren of Christchurch.

The show finished at 5.30pm Saturday night and we left to join the mass exodus of cars leaving the stadium. We got back to our motel where the mother-in-law was looking after our twin boys while we were at the show. At 5.50pm, we we literally just stepped back into the motel room, she asked how it went. Before I could reply the room shook like crazy, so we grabbed all the kids and stood in the doorways for a minute while the city was once again hit.

This time a 5.3, 11km deep and a few km away in the harbour. No deaths but more liquifaction, stuff thrown off shelves and a 5-storey building that was borderline for demolition before was given a red sticker at 5.51pm...

After a rough night with sick kids I finally managed to get to sleep at 5.30am... only to be woken by another sharp jolt at 6.10am. Fortunately everyone was awake so we got them all fed and changed and left by 8.30am.

It was a great weekend, but the shaking was just typical!

There's a controversial weather-predictor at the moment who "predicted" the Feb 22nd quake, and made a prediction of another big one in march, although what eventuated was a larger-than-normal aftershock.

He's been slammed in the media and scientific community for being a fraud. His website had various 'hot' days when hightened techtonic activity might be expected.

This weekend was one of them. Go figure.

Glad to hear you had a good time despite the rattling. I was heartbroken to see what happened to Christchurch. We were only there for a short time but I have to say it is such a beautiful city. The architecture was so quaint and it had a real English feel to it.

It wasn't fun, especially considering we were on the second floor of the motel.

The wiggles rocked though. :D

What really scares me about that's happened to Christchuch is they will never be able to rebuild on some of the areas again.

I think it's got something to do with the liquefaction but I can't get my head around it at all. That some areas of the city are just going to have to be left as barren wasteland.

(The Wiggles are coming back to Saskatoon in August - I'm hoping to get tickets :D )

It certainly makes sense to associate the location of the Moon with tectonic activity. I mean even though we really only notice the Tidal Stresses in the larger bodies of water, the Moon's gravity does pull on everything, including the crust and magma.

That's a bunch of bull.

There's no increase in earthquakes, only an increase in earthquake detectors.
And the "supermoon" occurs every 18 years.
