When Kirk DID come back (or nearly)

I was just thinking about the times Shatner has been in talks to return to Star Trek and there were a few:

- TNG the Movie: The original idea was for Picard to consult a hologram of Captain Kirk
- ENTERPRISE: Either as Emperor Tiberius (travelled back in time via the Tantalus field) or Chef, an ancestor of Kirk brought forward in time by Daniels to take Kirk's place in a major historical event - so not quite the same man, the second one would have shown new scenes of him in place of Kirk
- The JJVerse - as a holographic recording carried by Ambassador Spock

Also how many times HAS Shatner played Kirk since 1994? Well there's Starfleet Academy, the DirecTV ad and that Oscars sketch in live-action and he voiced the role in the Generations, Legacy and Tactical Assault videogames. So it's been a handful of projects

If it isn't "too late", JJ should let him read the mission statement, in voiceover, at the very end of Beyond, it would put a nice bow on the 50 year anniversary. Shat is in great shape for a man of his years, but he won't be with us forever.

That wasn't quite "the original idea." Rick Berman commissioned two stories to be developed simultaneously for the TNG movie. Ron Moore and Brannon Braga's idea was the one chosen, and that one became Generations. The "Kirk on the Holodeck" idea (by Maurice Hurley, IIRC) was simply the one that wasn't picked.
