'When it Rains...' and 'Tacking into the Wind'

I'll give it a shot:
When it Rains.....(it pours). Lots of INTERNAL strife in this episode on top of the Dominion War
Tacking into the Wind....is a way one maneuvers a sailboat into a head wind....meaning it was tough going, against the Dominion and against the one's supposedly your allies (Rosot and Gowron)

What's interesting about Tacking is re-rise of the Alpha Sisko. Telling Worf, do what you need to do to get the Klingon's straightened out-yes, kill the Chancellor of the High Council-here on my station. I loved it. "You will not win this daayyyyyy" Heh heh

"When It Rains" - it pours. With all the big shit that's been going down lately, now we have this to deal with too? Krazy Klingons, one of the good guys has a terrible disease, and people from the Federation gave it to him? Lordy.

"Tacking into the Wind" - we're trying our best, pushing our hardest to do what needs to be done, even though every force of nature seems to be pushing against us. But we won't give up, damn it!

"Tacking into the Wind" is an old sailing phrase. I remember reading an interview with someone on staff who explained exactly what this means, but I can't remember at the moment.

Tacking into the wind is a method of sailing upwind. You can't sail directly upwind, so you cut across the wind, forward and sideways, then change direction, across the wind the other way. If the wind is blowing from the north, you're moving northeast, then northwest, then northeast... to go north.

It's a metaphor for slow and difficult progress.

^^^What you're referring to is called "beating", when you tack back and forth to your destination, generally going from close-hauled to close-hauled position.

"Tacking into the wind" is also redundant. There is no other way to tack BUT into the wind. It never sits well with me, much like saying "Hand written with your hand."

For my money, "Tacking Into the Wind" is the last truly great episode of DS9. "What You Leave Behind" was good, but flawed. "Tacking" was brilliant.

I've been saying that for years. Its one of the ten best eps of the entire series IMO.

There was a scene cut out of "Tacking...." in which Worf said he wished his father Mogh could have seen him "at the top" of the Klingon Empire. Seems to have been one the writers were sad to lose.

Yeah, the problem is that (for me at least) the whole last run of episodes blend together but Tacking has a lot of great stuff. The stuff with Kira, Odo, Damar and Garak (particularly Damar's continuing evolution), interspersed with Worf's Gowron dilemma, really makes great use of elements and character arcs that have been YEARS in the making (and in the case of Worf and Gowron, brought over from an entirely different series).
