When is it okay to "boo"?

This past weekend, Terelle Pryor started and played well in the OSU game. The former starter, Todd Boeckman, was inserted later in the game. He promptly threw a pass that was 10 yds short, which caused a large amount of booing at said player. That just made no sense to me. This is a nice, decent, team-first guy who just last season was the conference QB of the year. He's a 6th year senior, having "grey-shirted" earlier. He's not some overpaid professional slug. Now, Pryor is clearly the guy to go with at this point, but in my eyes the booing was utterly uncalled for.

Have you ever booed at a sporting event? If so - or even if not - under what conditions do you feel it's perfectly acceptable to boo? When is it never okay to boo?

At Football/Soccer, its fine to Boo and even have the odd funny chant though nothing past should happen. There is no point in clapping if your team is doing badly because they need a good kick up the arse but if there trying hard no matter the result then you get behind them.

I was a little annoyed at the American fans at the Ryder Cup because Golf is a game for respect and they were out of the line at times with there banter against the European team and I hate to use the phrase but majorty of people who had a problem with it have said "Typical Americans"...harsh but I can see why they thought that.

I think it's booing should generally be reserved for when someone does something unprofessional or unsportsmanlike.

Intentionally throwing a baseball at someone, taking a dirty shot at the quarterback, taunting, hot husteling out a grounder, stuff like that.

As far as booing about performance, I think people get out of control about this. They boo over their guy striking out in the 3rd inning of some meaningless game in May.

I think you should only boo if your team is totally inept. After your kicker misses his 4th field goal of the day or your bullpen blows it for the 30th time.

I think the Mets bullpen is boo-worthy right now.

Is it ever acceptable to boo at a so-called amateur sporting event, such as the Olympics or college level?

For college, it depends on the sport. College football? Absolutely. Something like lacrosss? Probably not.

One bad play shouldn't result in booing of your players, but if it's consistent enough to become tiresome, yeah, there's no problem with booing.

It is ok to boo when Luis Castillo steps up to the plate or Aaron Heilman takes the mound. It is ok to cheer and give a standing O when a Cubbies pitcher hits Luis Castillo.

 - OKay .... now that's a story I need to have explained.

Last night during the game one of the Cubbies relievers (I really wish I remember his name) hit Castillo and the crowd erupted in cheers. The SNY booth didn`t go into too much detail but they made a quick note of it. I gotta say, that was the high point of the game for me.

Why on Earth did they sign him for 4 years?!? His body was already breaking down. I thought he was just a mid-season replacement for the pennant drive last year. Same goes for Alou, you KNEW he was gonna get hurt.

When your starting quarterback throws an interception, and subsequently attempts to deck a teammate trying to console him, booing is more than justified.

Yes, this actually happened in the denouement of the Rutgers-Navy game Saturday. Mike He– er, Teel, was the culprit.

Yet he's the starter Saturday. Schiano needs to have his head examined.

I think it's ok to boo professional athletes, for just about anything. You're paying hard earned $$$ to park your ass in an overpriced seat, drinking expensive flat beer from rusty pipes. But I draw the line at booing, and anyone that tosses stuff out on to the ice/field should be promptly ejected.

Agreed Garak...

Case for the Vikings: Tarvaris Jackson. Everyone waited until near the end of the game to boo him and for good reason. We could have won against Indianapolis if he could actually, you know THROW PASSES instead of whatever in God's name he does with the football.

I would only boo if the officials made a bad call.

Definitely not anyone on the team I'm rooting for. That's just tacky shit. Like Yankees fans who boo A-Rod. That's low. I don't frakking care how bad he screws up. Your own team, IMHO, should be off limits from booing.

A-Rod is the best player in the game, and has a pretty squeaky clean image to go with it. I don't get how they can boo him.

Oliver Perez last night was a perfect example of a performance worthy of booing. Staked to a 5-1 lead in a HUGE game with playoff implications, he gave it all back the next inning. I would have booed him had I been there too.

I agree; the only exception being maybe when they aren't even trying to win (or appear so at least).

Any time the Ref's/Linesmen Fuck UP!!(as a friend once said never give them a break good or bad, )

Anytime Kyle Busch ,Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, or any Hendrick cars wins.

Anytime the Leafs, Habs, Flames or Oilers win :D

Because A-Rod loves him some A-Rod. He puts up beauty show numbers but folds when it's crunch time or the game's on the line. Because he played the Yankees against themselves to get more money recently.

Because he's a sorry individual represented by the baseball anti-christ.

[/rant]

Your home/favorite team shouldn't be off limits to boo - when they can't play dead, when the coaching staff make terrible decisions regarding plays or clock management, when they repeatedly squander opportunities.

Any time Todd Bertuzzi touches the puck is boo worthy.

A-Rod's image isn't so squeaky clean any more, not since Mrs/ A-Rod filed for divorce claiming infidelity and so on.

Booing is something I just cannot see as permissable unless someone commits a flagrant act of some kind. At the professional level, perhaps there's a bit more leeway on when to boo, since this is a job for them. I'm still not sure "becuse I paid my ticket" is ever enough of a reason, though. Poor , uninspired play... "going through the motions" ... yeah, I can see booing that, but I don't now that I could ever bring myself to do so.

At the college level.... almost no act warrants booing. Cheap shots... okay. Coach going ballistic, that too. But at least in Boeckman's case there is not one way possible to justifying the boos. None whatsoever.

Every time Ashley Cole makes an appearance.

It is also okay to wave fake five pound notes at him issued by the "Bank of Russia" with his head in place of the Queen's.

In football (soccer) booing is certainly acceptable, both of your team and of the officials. It's quite common for a team who's performing poorly to be booed or whistled off the pitch at half time.
More 'respectable' sports, no. You clap both side's good points at a tennis match, for example.
