When does the show "take off"?

It takes off in season 3 and gets better and better.

But I would advice you to watch season 1 and 2 as well to get a good picture of everything, the characters and premises for the show. Some really good episodes in those seasons too.

I'm curious what you figure are the elements from the first two seasons which are needed to get an understanding of the show that you don't get from the third season alone (or onward).

Probably 3, like everyone else says, but I do love season 2. "Measure of a Man" and "Q Who" are two of my favorite TNG episodes.
