When did the internet come prominent in the Trekverse

Borg451

Captain
Here.. the the 90's when normal people started usign the net.. doing shoppign and stuff on it.. and posting onboards and using MSNM...

in Trek world when did this happen? given the Eugenics Wars..

earlier.. as they seem to have better tech then RL? or after... cos the Wars fucked things up... or sorta the same time..

discuss.. and try to keep it on trek not the history of the nett

Based on what we saw when Voyager went back to the mid-90's it looks like only parts of the world were affected by the wars. At least part of the USA seemed to be at the same level as we were.

I'm not sure if Khan's wars should have affected internet in any way. I mean, Khan's wars didn't seem to affect the United States in any way, judging by Janeway's visit there in "Future's End" immediately after the wars were over. And we never hear of them having had an effect on Europe, either. So, even if Khan totally devastated India's ability to play a leading role in computer technology, internet as we know it would be born in Europe and the United States in the 1990s.

We could certainly argue that the more advanced computer technologies of the Trek universe would advance the timetable of global networking. But we don't have data on the timetable. All we know is that Henry Starling in "Future's End" explicitly credits himself with the invention of "the internet" (or at least with making it possible), right between barcode readers and laptops.

Of course, it might also be that Starling's internet is very different from ours. After all, Starling's computers are different from ours, apparently defaulting to cut-paste-delete rather than copy-paste when moving stuff between terminals. Perhaps in Starling's world of computing, privacy and rights are everything, and the sort of free sharing that characterizes our internet is weeded out?

It isn't Rain Robinson's first instinct to inform the world via internet when she finds alien life. Instead, she ponders if she should inform NASA. That's a pretty good indication that she didn't live in a world networked like ours. ;)

:wtf: Oh, come on, Borg451. Can't you even wait until I have a new avatar before stealing it anymore?

Since it's pretty much confined to one double episode, and that's already been addressed here, I'm not sure how much there is to discuss.

However...
:wtf: Oh, come on, Borg451. Can't you even wait until I have a new avatar before stealing it anymore?
He's right, Borg451 -- your taking (without permission) the avatar NCC-1701 made was pretty much crap the first time you did it. That you did it again after being called on it once doesn't say anything good about you.

Sorry, NCC-1701 - I had figured you'd given your permission to Borg451 though I was going to get around to checking with you to make sure. I'd completely forgotten though.

I'll see if I can do something about the situation. In this thread I suggest that he stop using it or at least ask to use the avatars.

Thanks, StolenThunder. That's very considerate of you. I want to be very clear about that: I don't have any problems with people using avatars that I made. In fact the opposite is the case – it flatters me, because people are acknowledging that they like what I have done with the avatar. In the past year I've been a member of this board I have given several people the permission to use an avatar by me. But the difference is that they always asked and then credited me in their sigline. Look, I don't want to come across as a prick – I know I don't created South Park or Marie Antoinette. But believe me, each time I spent several hours creating such an avatar. After that you at least want people to ask you if they could use the avatar.

I was wondering about Borg451 using your avatar.

BTW, that's one funky new avatar you got there. I know you told me once before but please refresh my memory, what software do you use?

^ No problem. I use PowerDVD to make screencaps off my DVDs. Then Photoshop to maipulate the pics. And finally Macromedia Fireworks to arrange the single frames. But I'm sure there are other programs one can use as well.

BTW, I invite you to join all the posters who wear the new Sombreroprise. If you don't know what the hell I'm talking about, go here. ;)

Hat's of to Henry Starling who didn't only create the "computer revolution" and the use of internet (shame on you Bill Gates for taking credit for that) but whose dabbling with time obviously erased the Eugenic Wars as well. ;)
