When did JJ Abrams pitch his ST XI?

Star Trek was in development before the deal with Paramount, but I doubt it would have been made if Abrams didnt sign the Bad Robot/Paramount 5 year deal in the summer of 2006 (i think exactly 2 years ago). The Abrams deal is a multipic deal. Star Trek was goin to be the first movie, but then Cloverfield came along and it became the first, he has a few other films going as well. Paramount are trying to get Abrams and the writers nailed down for the second one now. Bear in mind that Orci and Kurtzman are not part of Bad Robot and they have their deal with Dreamworks, who will soon no longer be part of Paramount.

anyway enough inside baseball stuff

Besides, how wold you feel if any new Trek hit the shelves wedged between the latest Richard Grieco crapfest and Girls Gone Wild: Sumatra Spring Break with little to no fanfare? Talk about going out with a whimper.

Good point. I still think it would be a cool way to explore some of the lesser known periods of Trek, certainly I don't see it as a venue for TOS or TNG.

At this point, I'll just be happy to get J.J.'s movie into the theater.

For Trek to do that, it would be a symbolic gesture that it has failed and has given up being a powerhouse franchise and a pop culture phenomenom on par with Star Wars. With yet another Star Wars film comming out (albeit animated), Paramount couldn't afford to turn throw in the towel now. Symbolic gesture? It's already a concrete fact that Trek failed. ENT's cancellation and Nemesis confirmed that. This will be the second attempt to revive Trek by means of a prequel. Star Wars already had a hugely successful trilogy of prequel movies. Comparing Trek and Wars back in the late 70s and early 80s was fine and dandy but these days it's not even a contest. It's all about survival now.

Just as the series Lost started to jump the shark Abrams done some MissionImpossible writing and signed a deal with Paramount. With his new contract he had a lot to live up to running against hits like the Shreks and Transformers. Cloverfield was his first big one for them. Paramount decided rather than give Abrams a resurrection of Beverly Hills Cop 5 why not get him to do some of their other brand names like Trek movies.

That said though, the Romulan War still could've made a worthwhile Straight-to-DVD release, filling in that particular gap in Trek history.

Now those are some waters I wish Paramount/CBS would test. Everything doesn't have to be a multi million dollar movie or long term TV series. A nice movie of the week type production.

In general I agree, but Romulan War was being banged around back in 1999 when we were debating what the next series was gonna be. At this point I think they need to just not, so they won't screw up everyone's precious expectations. We're all a little bit on tenderhooks.
