What's the wildest Who rumour you've ever heard?

The Enterprise crossover proposal was not a joke since RTD mentions this in A Writer's Tale.

Yes, but always tongue firmly planted in cheek. Remember the Writer's Tale isn't a book. It's a collection of e-mails between him and DWM writer Benjamin Cook. And he is quite often irreverent and, well, tongue in cheek. Such as his going on about wanting Russell Tovey to be the next Doctor simply because he has the hots for him. And the first volume reveals an obsession with Skins that borders on the creepy.

Not saying the idea of a Trek crossover didn't occur to him as RTD belongs to the writing school of "let the ideas flow freely now and edit the impossible later". And the idea of a Trek pastiche is certainly not out of the question, but I'm convinced the whole Enterprise thing pretty much started and ended with his discussions with Benjamin Cook. That's because the original version of Steven Moffat's The Empty Child/Doctor Dances, which would have been written in the 2003-2004 period in which this idea was allegedly considered, contains not only Rose referring to the Doctor as Mr. Spock, which got onto the screen but the Doctor retorting "I'd rather be Doctor Who than Star Trek" which sadly was cut.

Re: A Christmas Carol: I believe the homage to Trek has been acknowledged, the lens flares being the giveaway.

Speaking of be Brosnan rumour, wasn't Leonard Nimoy going to direct that version?
Nimoy was going to direct from a script by Denny Martin Flinn (Star Trek VI). While it's been widely reported that Brosnan was intended as the Doctor (such as in Jean-Marc Lofficier's The nth Doctor), the producers actually favored Alan Rickman for the Doctor.

Although it's not a "rumor" because it actually came from a direct source, this talk from RTD about doing an Enterprise crossover for Season 1 I still maintain was a joke people took seriously. I can't see the logistics being possible (for a comic book, yeah sure, but not TV). Plus, at the time Season 1 of DW was being prepared, Enterprise was fast heading out the door, and had the crossover occurred it would have aired after Enterprise was cancelled.
Alex, RTD has brought up the crossover enough times, in interviews as well as The Writer's Tale -- and often with genuine regret that it didn't happen, that it's definitely not a joke that people took seriously.

^ Rickman would be brilliant as The Doctor. Or the Master.

Brosnan, of course, will have to play the next incarnation of Rassilon...

Not exactly a rumor, but more of a personal speculation, but watching the commander of the Teselector, particularly in "The Wedding of River Song", I got the impression the actor played it a bit like Captain Kirk. Oh, not the often spoofed "pauses", just the general air of confidence with s hint of bravado.

Maybe I'm reading too much into the performance, but I was easily able to imagine William Shatner in his prime during the latter 1960s playing that scene when he's bidding the Doctor farewell, knowing the TimeLord is marching to his death.

Dowes anyone know if the production intended it that way, or am I just imagining things?

Sincerely,

Bill

I think Rickman would absolutely be great as the Master. I can't really picture him as the Doctor, though, but, I'd be willing to try if he was selected as the Doctor.

If Rickman were the Doctor, Jeremy Irons would have to play the Master! :techman:

@23Skidoo...so you're dismissive of both versions of The Writer's Tale because the books are composed with email correspondence? I'm not a published writer, but I have tons of emails with ideas that I've pitched back and forth with various friends and family members...both in a joking manner and very serious pitches. Cook maybe jovial and humorous at times but that doesn't mean RTD's pitches and other things he mentions in the book aren't or whatever. Seems a strange reason to be dismissive of the books because of the format it was compiled. It doesn't make what RTD pitched any less genuine or real.

The wildest rumor about Dr. Who was that the guy on the Antique Roadshow was to be the new Doctor when the series returned in 2005.
Or that Sylvester McCoy was coming back for the 2005 season and the powers that be were ingoring the TV Movie. Now THAT was wild!
