What's Special About IMAX?

The closest IMAX is about 70 miles away...I've been once, and I can't say I was overly impressed, maybe it just isn't a very good IMAX. It was cool seeing Dinosaurs in 3D, but it seemed a lot smaller than I expected.

One thing that puts me off about IMAX (besides the hefty preimum you pay to get in) is that the screen seems to be dim at times. Dimmer than a standard movie screen.

I've been to a bunch of different IMAX theaters and I have noticed that the screen size varies widely. Some are huge and some are just "pretty big."

I dunno how you know what kind is what, though. Their website doesn't list that information. So it's possible you went to one of the less impressive theaters.

EDIT: Checking the page I do see that AMC is putting an IMAX theater into 3 of their existing regular theaters locally. That's pretty neat, actually. Around here all the regular IMAX theaters are in museums and tend to close when the museum does. It'll be nice to have some more options, at least.
