What's going on?

What's with all these silly threads? Note that I haven't closed them. I just want to know why.

Killing time? Figuring what's good enough for Bones1864 is good enough for you guys? And for that matter I'm undecided on whether or not Bones is spamming or just enthusiastic.

I want to keep how much I moderate down to a minimum because if I moderate everything then it's going to turn into a full-time job and I don't know about Kira's Mom but I don't have the time or desire for it but I also don't want people taking advantage and constantly posting any old stupid thing.

It's not hurting anyone, I just want to wrap my head around a tempo for the forum that works.

It's a little much, if you ask me. I'm all for dumb stuff here and there but it's bordering on overkill. Then again, what else is going on in here until they announce the rest of the cast and production starts?

That's the reason I'm on the fence about what to do. The answer in a situation such as this would seem to be a compromise.

So long as the ratio of silly threads isn't too high, let's leave what I consider a high ratio unknown and case-by-case for now, no posters are trolled or attacked, and no deliberately false information is posted in a serious manner (with the exception of April 1st) then I'll let it slide.

Fair? Unfair?

The tension is killing us.

Over the next 30 days - just over four weeks - tons of information is going to drop. Probably something that's a big deal, every few days.

Kirk. McCoy. Villain. The occasional "my friend works at Paramount (won't say where) and he walked by the door of the soundstage and this was standing outside in plain sight right next to the carpenters' lunch wagon (good thing he had his digital phone - heh heh)" followed by confident (and highly original) declarations that "It's a fa-a-a-a-a-ke!".

We're waiting for the birthday cake, and we're hiding under the covers talking half the night.

Or something.

Eh, I don't think anyone is pissing anyone off. It's harmless. Most've the stuff is by regulars far more senior than me, from what I've noticed. As the poster formerly known as DWC Defence noted, the suspense is killing us.

Wait until there are some serious announcements and four or five (or ten?) times as many folks at any given time are posting here, and real venom is going back and forth on casting and plot points. I'd think by then a moderator would long for the good old days of the time-killing threads.

It's the calm before the storm.

That's a given.

Okay, I've brought up the issue, opened discussion, made a decision, so I'm covered and everyone knows where these threads stand.

Carry on.

Honestly?

I think everyone's just being goofy and killing time.

The news about this movie is pretty sparse, and far between when we get anything new. So I know for myself, I'm just flaking out and goofing off.

And I'm pretty sure everyone else is also.

If we need to knock it off or tone it down, let us know and we'll do so.

Man, I want some new news so bad! Everyday I keep thinking, "Today is going to be the day" haha. All I want is a confirmed cast

Once we get real news about casting, and shooting begins, the silly threads need to stop (or at least not have so many!). For now, there's no harm. They're pretty funny for the most part.

^ I have a feeling it won't be the last one. ^

* You bet it won't be the last one we're hugry for news out here *

Honestly, the only reason I started that thread about Shatner playing a centaur is because me and some co-workers have had an odd fixation with centaurs here lately, which has spilled over to the BBS somewhat.

Why not just insist on putting a tag on all the joke spoilers with [joke] in the title. That way anybody who doesn't want to read a fake spoiler about how Spock is going to be a purple cow don't have to.

I think they're mostly harmless, considering how little actual news we have.

purple cow, you say??

If Spock isn't a purple cow, I am walking out of the theatre, throwing popcorn at the screen.

I have never, in the history of the entire internet, seen a more heavily moderated message board than this one...To an extent that a guy like me (Just read my signature) can't follow most threads that are allowed by the all mighty moderators about 1/2 to 3/4 of the time.

I guess what I'm suggesting is, maybe this forum is just a good one for a change around here?? For people like me anyway...

(I mean really! I got a warning for posting too many follow-up comments in one thread. That, I just plain don't get? What am I supposed to do?? Wait a day or two between posts in the same thread???)

I was willing to be patient with all these silly threads but the Billy Barty thread changed my mind. Just cut it out already, people!

I had nothing to do with that!

Just so you know, I wouldn't do that. Maybe you've had a bad experience with other moderators but, as far as I can recall, you haven't had a bad experience with me. So relax.

If I truly were High and Mighty then I wouldn't even be having this discussion. What I would've done was close every thread I considered spammy on the spot and warned all the posters who started them. That's heavy moderation. I didn't do that.

And yes, I do see this as a Test Bed and a chance for a change. One forum that comes to mind that I'm trying to make sure this forum doesn't become like is ENT. I'm not going to point the finger on any one person, it was a combination of several things that built up over many years due to a lot of different people, posters and mods alike, but I have the advantage of being an outsider to the entire mess and have 20/20 hindsight. I can use what I know and correct it here.

I used to post on another ST board before TrekBBS, Psi Phi. There was a flame war period over there for a while and after a year or two the administrator took action. He banned everyone who caused a conflict there, prevented them from even being able to read the board, would prune every post that didn't fall neatly into line, wouldn't allow profanity, and wouldn't allow anything that resembled horsesplay. If you acted up, you were gone. End of story. No discussion, nothing. TrekBBS is the most visibly moderated bulletin board I've ever seen but it's not the most heavily moderated.
