What's all the shouting about?

A few weeks ago there was a thread of what I call Over Hated Trek. The usual award nominees in this category being Wesley Crusher, ST Voyager, ST Enterprise, and there was more.

Is there any Trek that you consider over rated? I can think of some. Don't get me wrong I can find something to like in every Trek series I'm just being the Devil's Advocate.

The first over rated Trek:

DS9: Yes, it explored deeper and darker areas than traditional Treks. I found the lack of TNG's smug self righteousness to be positive. However, there were plenty of shark jumping episodes when they dwelt on the Mirror Universe. The Cardassians and Bajorans were well realized races. The Ferengi were comic book Shylocks. Every Ferengi episode was supposed to be for comic relief but did a poor job. The last season arc with romance between Dukat and Wynn...the less said the better. Having Dukat with red eyes belonged in a Captain Proton novel.

Next:

Seven of Nine:

Meh...what's all the shouting about? I know there are the quatitative numbers that show Voyager's ratings getting a boost. I guess it's a guy thing. IMHO they could have gone farther with Seven. For instance they could have made her liberation from the Collective more iffy; sort of like Sharon the Cylon on nuBSG.

Thats the problem with Seven for me. get a woman with ig chebs, put her in a catsuit and expect ratings!

There was very little to Seven. She seemed like a very dull and shallow character that didn't change or evolve that much and to me it became tedious. Especially as she seemed to be a focal point.

Then along came Seven mark II in the form of T'Pol.

More of the over rated but not hated:

Star Trek: The Voyage Home- I enjoyed the movie as much as the next guy. However, it was the much overused time travel device plot tool that was employed. I thought not again!!

In fact ALL of the even numbered Trek movies have a little too many hosannas sung of them. The reason? I think that their odd numbered predecessors were perceived to be of such awful quality. Yes, the odd numbered Trek movies are quite the whipping boys,

Now, if I were to be reaaally nitpicky, I'd say that Ferengi were pretty much the opposite of Shylock. The Ferengis are all about profit (and, at least some of them, in having a good time), while Shylock was all about revenge. The Ferengis despise revenge (there is no profit in it), and would look down on Shylock - what profit is there in killing a man, while turning down all suggested financial substitutions for the contracted pound of flesh? Shylock was full of anger, bitterness and hatred because of the insults he had received all his life from the racial/religious majority people he lived among, and was as a result at least as prejudiced against them as they were against him, and determined to make them (or at least one of them) pay for it in a bloody way. So if any race in DS9 are "Shylocks", it's obviously the Founders.
