Whatever happened to Rodrigez's Red Sonja?

I think it was last summer Robert Rodrigez announced at ComicCon his next project as RED SONJA starring his girlfriend Rose McGowen.

Since then, I have heard nothing about the project. Lots of talk about Sin City 2 and Predator and other proposed movie projects, but no Red Sonja.

Anyone know what happened? Is this project dead???

Imdb.com says that it's in pre-production, to be released in 2010.

But the director is someone named Douglas Aarniokoski.

Just as an aside--in a recent CNN interview, Arnold Schwarzenegger listed the 1985 Red Sonja as one of the worst movies he ever made, along with Hercules in New York.

He also joked that he terrorizes Democrats in the state assembly by threatening to force them to watch Red Sonja, over and over again, unless they give him what he wants.

Universal pulled the plug on Rodriguez's version of Barbarella because of budget concerns. Robert Luketic is now attached to direct, and Dino De Laurentiis's company is shopping it around to studios.

I hope it's dead. Rose McGowan as Red Sonja makes as much sense as Shia LeBoeuf as Conan. Don't anyone from Hollywood take that as encouragement.

If he wants to put his girlfriend in a movie, pick on something like Barbarella that I don't give a flying frak about.

Let's face it people. Whether you like it or not, Katee Sackhoff owns Sonja's chain mail bikini. Let's just cast her in the role, dye her hair red, and get the frak on with it.

Fair enough, but the snarly attitude that Katee usually exudes seems different to me than RS but I've never really read them so much as glanced over them so maybe it does fit the character.

You know, Red Sonja won't necessarily be played by Rose McGowan. If Rodriguez is filming anything before Sonja, for all we know he might have an affair with one of his actresses and leave McGowan!

Neilsen is 6'1". Comment on her acting as much as you like, but at least she looked the part in Red Sonja.

Rachel Nichols is 5'10", McGowan is 5'4" and Sackhoff is 5'6". So Nichols is the only one suggested so far who even comes close.

If we're really going to have to suffer through yet another two hours of a superhuman woman beating up loads of guys (and Joss Whedon isn't even attached to this project yet), at least pick someone who doesn't have to stand on a crate to do so.

Problem is, anyone close to Neilsen's height looks more like a supermodel than a warrior.

This should be one of those roles cast outside of the mainstream. I am sure there are plenty of talented actresses who look "right" for this part and are stuck in Art Films or Community Theatres around the country because of their looks.

I agree that Nielsen looked the part. However, I think they took far too many liberties with her costume in order to make it semi-kid friendly. I wish they would stick to the impossible bikini chain mail -
