What you did or didn't like about TVH....

Joel_Kirk

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
This film completed the arc that started with TWOK.

From what I understand, this Trek was a bit more popular with casual fans, as it had our crew interacting with 20th century norms (i.e. language, customs, etc...)

I think Saavik was supposed to be pregnant with Spock's child...(Someone might want to correct me on that)...

Trivia, which everyone knows:

Gillian Taylor and Willard Decker somehow end up in 7th Heaven...

Likes:

-The fun that everyone seemed to have
-Seeing Amanda Grayson Sarek again in Trek
-20th century 'stuff' colliding with what our heroes are not used to...
-Seeing the captain of the Saratoga; it was surprising because she was black and she was female....and she was in charge...
-That ending with the crew finding ENT-A, and warping out...

Dislikes:

-I don't have any....

***

Sidenote(s):

-I don't mind the theme by Leonard Rosenman, but it isn't one of my favorite themes....
-For those who are familiar with sfdebris, he has a good and hilarious review of TVH on Youtube...

Disliked:The time travel sequence.

Otherwise a nice fish out of water story. The comedy worked.

Yeah, just too little of this:

Yeah, I know, it was blowed up. Still, I loves me my Enterprise! I cheered the first time they came upon the 1701-A in the theatre!!!:techman:

Likes: Amanda's appearance. Short, but sweet.

Otherwise, this movie's aged terribly (IMO, of course) and I don't enjoy it much any more. Even at the time the blunt-force way the movie's message was delivered grated; it's even more annoying now, for some reason. It's possible to deliver a message without beating the viewer over the head with it and TVH is one of the worst examples of what I call the sledgehammer effect in Trek.

Another dull score, too.

You will understand if I beg to disagree, I assume.:)

No problemo. You weren't insulting or otherwise unpleasant, after all. :D And as I often say, to each their own. :bolian:

Yes! That's what makes horse racing (i say that often).

But I'm with little brother Chris. I love TVH. I cannot think of a single thing that i dislike about it. And it has some of the best ST quotes evah!

Chris: What a wonderful xmas gift!

My only real negative is that I wish James Horner had written the score to give it a better sense of continuity.

Yeah, that would have been interesting to have Horner create an upbeat score for this entry...

Likes.............

a nice change of pace movie that hit what it was aiming for.
Although, I think, in retrospect it was a lost opportunity for a quality action movie while the production team was hitting on all cylinders.

Dislikes..........

the score, lack of action, lack of Enterprise, leaking roof at Starfleet (WTF?),

-Hm, what jumped out at me first was the Black female captain of the Saratoga. I seriously sat up, punched the air and yelled "YAY!" That was definitely a positive. This is one thing that I like about Trek; the diversity. Everyone can watch it and see themselves represented (most of the time) in a positive manner.

-I was also very surprised that I enjoyed the comedy. It wasn't over the top and slap-sticky. I liked that as well.

-I was suitably affected by the extinction story and was a little surprised that they agreed to take Gillian along. Eh, I guess it was only 300 years she had to catch up with.

-Spock cursing. Priceless.

I can't think of any cons.

I rewatch this one the least of the TOS films, because it relies heavily on jokes that aren't so funny when you've watched it a dozen times. It's funny again if you give it 2-3 years breathing room.

I generally only revisit it when doing a movie marathon, because it does give welcome levity after the 'down notes' of TSFS.
