Since I download most of my programming, my cable requirements would be pretty limited

The real networks which I could get OTA but would have on my cable for convenience, and the fact that they're thrown in as freebies:

ABC
FOX
CBS
NBC

I would probably skip my network TV or the CW or whatever. Never watch them...

Cable Channels:
ESPN
ESPN2
NFL Network
CNN
Fox News
MSNBC
Comedy Central
Syfy
HGTV
Discovery
National Geographic (probably, don't have it on my current package)
History
Random History/Discovery/Whatever spinoffs... there's too many to remember

And then NFL Sunday Ticket... you know, were that not DirecTV exclusive nonsense.

In no particular order:

CBS (for "The Price Is Right", only)
NBC (just in case something airs worth a damn)
FOX
TBS
TNT (mainly for "Men of a Certain Age")
FOX News
The History Channel
The Discovery Channel
CourtTV (or what ever that stupid name is they changed it to)
Sci-Fi Channel (incase they should make a come back)
AMC
TMC
WGN
SpikeTV
FX
USA
Hallmark
ABC Family
TV Land
Cartoon Network
Comedy Central

One channel with three hours of excellent programming per week -- more than that is too much TV for me. Oh, I also need to specify -- no commercials.

The broadcast channels. Comedy Central. Cartoon Network. The movie channels (TBS, TNT, USA, etc). NFL Network. Nickelodeon. BBC America (which I don't have now).

I think this thread illustrates why this model will be fought against tooth and nail by the entertainment industry.

I don't think you can draw any conclusions based on this thread. The people here tend to be the type who only watch a narrow range of programming or don't watch TV at all.

Any ala carte system is most definitely going to be "opt out" where you actually have to contact your cable provider to tell them you don't want a particular channel, otherwise you get the whole package. And if ESPN, ESPN-2, ESPN-on-into-infinity add $10 to my cable bill, it's a no-brainer to get rid of them all.

But how many customers are actually going to take the time to sit down and think, "Okay, do I ever watch anything on HGTV?" Especially if HGTV only adds a few pennies to their bill?

I'm always looking for ways to save money on my cable bills and a LOT of people I know (most actually) gripe about having to wade through channels they don't want. I think people would be very proactive about doing so.
