I heard a couple guys on the radio today talking a little about Kobe Bryant's divorce and how much money his wife will be getting. It got me to thinking about what I would do if I suddenly came into a large amount of money. What would you do with it? Let's set an amount, say $100 million. Would you spend it or save it?

I'll go first. I would start by paying off my debts and that of my parents and in-laws, and possibly my siblings' homes. Then I would do some upgrades on my house, such as building a garage, but I don't think I would buy a new house or car, at least not right away. Then, I would invest the rest and use the interest in the following way. I'm a scientist doing research at a relatively small state university. There is some really good research going on here, but it's a small university so it's hard for a lot of the faculty to get funding. With the interest on the money I would offer grants to researchers here. I would fund my own research of course, and take applications from others here and decide on the most worthy projects to fund. A significant portion would also be used for charitable causes. Even conservatively invested I should have a few million dollars a year to hand out, so I could do a lot of good with it.

I would save half of it and run around spending the rest on other people. Then probably spend the second half on other people too.

^ This. What's money good for if you can't enrich the lives of the people you love?

    Bah!

I would destroy my enemies, then buy a luxury car with Condor floormats, and a Bald Eagle hat.

I would use the rest to finance a sequel to Serenity.

    In this order...

    1) Pay off my student loans and the student loans of all of my friends
    2) Pay off my other debts (car, house, etc)
    3) Pay off my parents' debt and give them a substantial monetary gift
    4) Quit my job and take a nice, long vacation
    5) Open a bar
    6) Fix up my house and turn it into a rental
    7) Buy myself a new house
    8) Throw a kickass party in my new house

    From there...? I don't know.

As long as you're not on my enemies list, sure.

Pay off all of my debts and my house.

    Let my father retire prematurely.

Travel at least three months per year. Fill my house with cooler shit. Possibly buy a new house. Buy at least 3-4 cars. Make sure the local animal shelter here is financed for the next decade. Invest the rest modestly.

Offer Christian an obscene amount of money for Trek Today/Trek BBS. Immediately close it down. ;)

    Fee-and-clear or before taxes?

Regardless the vast majority of it I'd probably contribute to various charitable organizations -or found my own charity to distribute the money.

I'd give some money to my parents, another sum of money to brother and his family, another sum to a co-worker really in need of it, and some to each of my two of my closest friends. Probably $1m for each group. Myself? I doubt my lifestyle would change drastically, I could probably easily survive on just a bit more than what I make now. Hell, $5-10m would probably be enough money for me to live on for the rest of my life.

So there we go, $10m for myself, $10-$12m to family/friends the rest to charity (I'd give the family/friends probably $2m so they'd get around $1m after taxes.)

I say again, I don't need that much money to live the rest of my life, $100m is way more than I could ever spend.

I will play the part of Kaylee's lover (that's right, AP, suck it!) who resurrects Wash back to life and his normal self, then sleeps with Mal before double crossing them all!

    Feh!
Okay, I would buy a Bald Eagle hat. :shifty:

But there's so much pleasure in giving (I demand you not read that sexily)! Seriously, I would take about $100,000 and run around in public throwing it into the air yelling "whee!".

    Consider my mind blown!

1.) Pay off all my debts.
2.) Buy myself a reasonably sized house.
    3.) Buy myself a newer car - most likely a full-sized truck like a Ford F-150.
4.) Invest half of what's left and live off the interest.
5.) Use the other half of what's left to find myself a girlfriend.

    With a 4-door extended cab?!

My dream car. I'm definitely buying one of those, too.

So that's the reason you don't have one now? All the ones you want are too expensive?

I would pay off my debts, buy myself a house, pay off the house we currently live in, set some aside for my parents' retirement, set some aside for my niece and nephew as a trust fund, buy myself my dream car (An Audi R8), and then take a massively long 'round the world vacation.
