What Would The World Be Like WITHOUT...........................

....Alcohol?

Imagine Alcohol was never discovered and therefore was never used and therefore pubs and inns never existed how do you think the world and mankind would have developed? how would society have developed without anywhere for people to go for an alcoholic drink?

We would all be drinking prune juice. A WARRIORS DRINK !:klingon:

Anyway, a world without alcohol would be less fun in some cases.
But then we would not miss what we've never known. If not alcohol then we'd have found something else to drink and pay good money for.

I wonder what no alcohol would mean for infections and medicine though, in past centuries...

If a process as blindingly obvious as fermentation had never been noticed, then that would probably mean that we as a species are utterly stupid and unobservant. So i'd guess we'd all still be living in caves.

Well, for one thing we'd have fewer cases of confused in-patients going into withdrawal and trying to drink from the alcohol-based hand rub bottles in order to calm down. :)

A lot of today's disinfectants are based on ethanol compounds, which do complement simple soap and water when maintaining infection control. It would certainly make surgery much risky if no such -OH compounds existed, with the increased risk of post-op infection and intra-op abscesses.

The modern world thrives on benefitting from having a "social drug" in moderation existing for our pleasure, be it the manufacturing and selling of alcohol products (which has implications for employment and thus the social and economic quality of life of the people directly, for bad as well as for good), the profits going into sponsoring our sporting and cultural events, and its taxation to fund for example our liver and transplant units, social services and addiction clinics, ironically enough.

Plus we wouldn't be having the alcohol-related pun fest develop for no discernable reason in the "Belgian Tattoo Girl" thread. :)

As I said before, quite sobering.

Weeeelll, Islam is supposed to be dry. They developed whole branches of math, medicine and astronomy, so I'd say it might continue. But, I dunno, I think we're better with it. We at least can say "I love you, man!" at 3 in the morning without feeling weird about it the next day. :D

Oh, and this:

I don't know about the world as whole but I do know that if alcohol didn't exist my life would have been easier.

I had a mother who drunk too much, followed by a husband (now ex-husband) who drunk too much.

Boxing Day lunch with the in-laws would be unbearable, the phones would never ring after 9pm and sales of syringe shaped pens and ridiculously high heeled shoes would slump on Ebay :)

I read a bit once that outlined how trade in alcohol (and the trade in cultivated ingredients) opened up some of the earliest known trade routes. It also helped develop agriculture as people looked for different things to make booze out of. So I think we'd be living in tiny, isolated communities pounding rocks for fun and profit. And I would be a lot harder to deal with, in general.:shifty:

There would be less car accidents. There would be less domestic violence. And people would be less attractive to each other.
