What We Left Behind...

Deep Space Nine was a very enjoyable show, and great Star Trek. The first three seasons build the characters we came to know, and love. Their theme--whether the Bajorans in relation to the Cardassians, The first visitor to station from the Gamma Quadrant, the Dark Bajor of Odo's people, Benny trying to get s story published--was oppression. It was a shade of gray, however. They didn't limit oppression to the bad guys. Garak was amoral, Dukat a political opportunist, Sisko felt the pressure to end the war he started. Kassidy was Jennifer's healing, but also aided the Maquis. Kira lectured collaborators and killed Cardassians, only to find herself serving as their masters, to preserve peace. Everything was a shade of gray, not a dark Trek, as it was billed, but a more complex one.

Seasons 4 and 6 remain the best of series, and contend with best the best in Star Trek history.

What You Leave Behind

Thank you to all involved. It was a seminal event in my life, and a unique version of Trek. It fits within the tapestry of the first three incarnations, all completely different from each other. For different reasons, I love those series. And, to end my love note to my second favorite Trek, here are my favorite moments:

1. Linear existence and "I exist here."
2. Every scene in "Rocks and Shoals."
3. Jadzia and Sisko talk about Lenara. "I've lived seven lifetimes, and never have I had friend quite like you."
4. Dukat justifies himself to Benjamin. "And that is why you are not an evil man!"
5. Worf and Jadzia in "Change of Heart." All scenes.
6. Worf and Sisko talking about leaving Starfleet. "The only way to get rid of the pain is to stand your ground, and face it."
7. "Duet" interrogation scenes.
8. Jake and Ben in "The Visitor."
9. "I am a human being, damnit!"
10. "We're losing the peace, which means a war may be our only...hope!"
