For the American Football fans, what was/is your favorite alternative league to the NFL? Did you ever attend any games? I know it's an unpopular choice, but I was always partial to the XFL. It was marketed very well, and had some pretty good quality football later in the season, there were just a few missteps that turned fans off:

-No preseason games to get teams acclimated before the regular season
-Ridiculous nicknames on the backs of jerseys
-Competing with March Madness
-Jesse "The Body" Ventura commentating

I really couldn't get enough football back then, so it didn't bother me that it was second tier.

I saw the first game and it sucked (mostly because of the excessive amounts of penalties). I saw the championship game and it was fine. I do remember that, only a couple years after it was canceled, people who complained about NFL rules would suggest things the XFL did and have no idea that the XFL did it (e.g., no fair catches, some alternative to the coin flip for possession).

I think almost every league that challenged the NFL contributed to rule changes in some way. The USFL, for example, used the 2 point conversion and coaches' challenges by instant replay before the NFL did.

Arena football really is like a different sport altogether. Very few players make the jump from Arena football to the NFL.
