what TV shows should exist, but don't?

Well we have a full slate of cop shows, doctor shows and lawyer shows. I'm sure there are a few categories that have been overlooked...

My main complaints are the lack of sci fi shows that I like; and the overall lack of historical fiction. Here are three ideas to kick things off.

Science Fiction
Earth vs. Mars Colony war. Based on the Red/Blue/Green Mars novels or not, I want to see this!

Historical Fiction
US Civil War. A good focus would be Harriet Tubman during the Civil War, since she had a pretty interesting military career, starting out as a nurse and cook, becoming a spy and even going into battle. This could be woven into the larger story of black troops in the Civil War (a la Glory but not necessarily focused on that particular company).

Story of early Christians. This would deal with events after Jesus - the way Christianity went from an obscure and persecuted Jewish cult to being in a position to take over the Roman empire.

Ooh, historical fiction!

A war series, set in the Gran Chaco war.
A palace intrigue series, about the court of Empress Wu.
A civil war series, set in England in the 1640s.

And there should still be an sf anthology series adapting short stories from after 1980.

Well...A Song of Ice and Fire is coming soon...but I would still love to see a big budget Wheel of Time series on TV as well.

And I would also like to see more high concept shows like Kings. Alternative history or whatever it was, it was interesting and new.

It is difficult to decide.

The biggest movie blockbusters of all time have almost always been some sort of genre work (sci-fi, fantasy).

Yet the biggest shows on television have generally been some sort of police/doctor/lawyer program.

Something about the medium or the audience, I suppose.
What works in one evidently does not in the other.

I think they ought to do a series anthology about the Hugo winners and nominees.

I'm surprised that there hasn't been a major show or movie about that. When I think about it though, I'm sure someone has thought of it, but the religious angle combined with trying to figure out how to tell a definitive story probably sank any prospects.

There's the Left Behind movies, but AFAIK they suck. The books are better.

I second that one.

Miracles might have evolved into that story. I got strong antichrist vibes from Paul - who would be unaware of his own identity. What if Alva Keel suspected who Paul was, and that was the reason he contacted Paul in the first place - to keep an eye on him and see if his fears are realized? Alva's mission may have been to kill Paul.

On the comic front, Reaper could have evolved into that story, too. The other option, even crazier: Sam's the Second Coming. Morgan could be the antichrist. However, the way they were going, it seemed unlikely that they would get that heavy. They were on the CW after all.

I know about those, but they don't count. From what little I saw, they were pretty bad.

American Gothic gave it a shot, but was canceled way too early.

I used to like that show, but it was about an evil sheriff with supernatural powers, not the figure of prophecy I'm thinking of.
