What tropes in science fiction annoy you?

Must be AI. ;)

If that's about the Murderbot Diaries most of them are novellas, so they're not going to take as long to write as a full-length novel.
They're only about 30-40k words IIRC. The exception is The Network Effect (full length novel) and its follow up System Collapse (short novel). It's done similar to a detective series, with recurring characters and a connecting story arc, which each book functions as a complete story on its own.

Oh, how could I forget this ubiquitous old classic—

“There are some things we were not meant to know.” / “Such things are meant for God alone.” (Nods piously.)

EDIT: Or as parodies Caveman Science Fiction, “Now me am like unto Gods!” (followed shortly by “Noooooo!” as ridiculous consequences ensue)

EDIT: …was paraphrasing from memory, here’s the real one.

So, the ending to 'Dark City' then?
While I like Dark City a lot, kinda, yeah. Though I’d forgive it if
instead of implying that humanity can only be understood by examining the heart, they’d instead said it was by examining the biochemistry — since that’s where emotions actually come from, and presumably that *would* be something the aliens weren’t familiar with.
