What to do in the Twin Cities

Hey gang,

My wife and I are looking for some entertainment later this week. Our daughter is having her summer visit at my folks house, and we're, well, we're not really welcome.

So, we're thinking of heading back to the ol' stomping grounds along the Mississippi from when I first started teaching and staying at the Treasure Island in Red Wing, Minnesota.

We're not really going to gamble for three days, and with the Twin Cities close at hand, what's going on in that area this week? We're looking to be there from the 30th-1st. Any art fairs? Festivals? Good theatre? Things of that nature?

Otherwise, it's three days of Pai Gow for us.

Unfortunately, the fairs don't start for another month.

There's (or at least there used to be) a big music festival in Minneapolis, but I think it might be the second week of August.

There are pattleboat rides that run from about Red Wing to St. Paul up the river. There's some spectacualr wildlife to be seen. (Though it's still a few weeks early yet.)

You could pretty much spend a whole day browsing the shops in Stillwater and then taking the scenic drive up the St. Croix.

Minneapolis has a Orpheum Theater and there's also the Guthrie, but since I don't live there any more I have no idea what's playing.

St. Paul has one of the country's biggest science museums.

Then there is, of course, the Mall of America.

Oooh, lots of good stuff there CorporalClegg!

Dang, the Uptown Art fair starts next Friday the 7th. And you just missed our 10 best days of summer festival-the Aquatennial. :(

Well, there's the big Titanic exhibit running at the Science Musuem in St. Paul. And a Pre-Raphaelite art exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. If you like classical music, the Italian Symphony will be at Orchestra Hall playing Mendelssohn Friday night. (I'm too lazy to post links...just google!)

If you want a little adventure, try the Segway tours. They're a blast! I live here and went on one a couple of years ago and loved it! I think you also get admission to the Mill City Musuem free with a tour, but it might have changed. Here's the website: http://www.humanonastick.com/index.htm.

There's numerous things to do, and if the weather cooperates, stay outside. Shop downtown on Nicollet Mall, see the Mary Tyler Moore statue in front of Macy's, grab some dinner on Eat Street, take the light rail to Mall of America. Definitely check out City Pages when you get here.

Have a great time!

I've actually been to the Mall of America recently, so barring a trip to Tucchi Bennuch for dinner, I don't see that in our plans. I was hoping that one of the 'burbs had an art fair for us to peruse and purchase from. We've been doing really well decorating our house with air fair purchases.
