What Theory/Spoiler Did You Get Wrong? [SPOILERS]

Mr Light

Admiral
Admiral
I attempted to avoid spoilers aside from the tv spots, so the movie was a bit unknown to me and I had a lot of surprises in store for me.

What theories or spoilers or assumptions did you go into the movie with that were totally wrong?

--The title "The Force Awakens" meant that nobody new got Force powers ever since ROTJ, and something at the start of the movie finally awakens the power in Kylo, Rey, and Finn. That's why Finn freaks out and goes on the run. Presumably something Luke did. This means that was never a Jedi Academy run by Luke, who was mostly alone these past 30 years, and Han and Leia's kids never had powers before now.
--Luke would actually be in the story and talk :p
--Luke would help them infiltrate the Starkiller Base a la Obi Wan
--Rey was Han and Leia's kid. She's been living on Jakku to grow up in hiding safe from Imperial assassins.
--Snoke was Plageuis
--Kylo Ren was Luke (just kidding!)
--Leia would be more than a glorified CO sending people on missions
--Poe Dameron would be boring and stiff
--Boyega would use his natural British accent
--Von Syndow was Rey's father figure and would have more than one scene
--Captain Phasma would actually do something, contribute to the story in some way, get an action sequence, fight a hero, or actually show her damn face. There's a Funko Pop figure of her, damn it!!!
--Rey owned the Falcon.
--That bad ass scene of Kylo with the rest of the Knights of Ren, including one holding the Buster Sword from FF7, would actually figure into the present day plot.
--Snoke would look like a weird alien and not just some scared/defaced human.

I really thought Luke had fallen to the dark side. Because I avoided anything that would give or spoil information, I didn't know the masked figure had a name and thought it might be Luke.

I can't say I had any hard formed theories going in, but I had saw what I thought was a spoiler that Ren would kill Finn so I was wondering about that.

I also got antsy about Snoke. I was hoping he would be Darth Plagueis. And then as the film went on and there was no Luke I was wondering if it would be revealed that Luke was Snoke.

I also wondered a bit if the lightsaber that flew to Rey might go to Luke. Or that Luke would show up. There was also a part of me that wanted Leia to show up, with lightsaber in hand, to take it to Kylo Ren.

There was an early rumor that the movie would open with Luke's hand falling from space towards a planet while still holding a lightsaber. I still had it in mind as the film started.

I think you covered all of the rumors I had heard, except for Han dying half way through the film, and the trailer shot of Rey crying on a jacket was her with Han's jacket. I expected that Han would die, but figured it would be later in the film.

I didn't have any theories going in, but I had read rumors and speculations, which were confirmed in the movie.

Kylo Ren is of the Skywalker clan.
Han Solo dies.

Going to be a while before we find that one out for sure. It is possible they will never tell us. Even with Luke standing in front of her.

Since I saw the clips of Fin with a lightsaber I assumed he would be the Jedi character. Since another character was cast as badass female in Episode 8 (drawing a blank on who off the top of my head), I thought it was possible Rey would die.

There was an assumption that Han or Chewie would die and have Rey crying over their body as we see her doing so in the trailer. It was assumed it was Chewie as their seemed to be fur and a bandolier. Turns out it wasn't either of those characters she was crying over, nor was that character dead. (that character being Finn after getting cut badly by Ren)

I thought Chewie would be the one to buy it.

My theory on Rey's parentage has yet to be proved or disproved. (For the record, I'm in the Luke's daughter camp.)

^ With Han dying instead of Chewie, perhaps they were subverting fan expectations based on the old EU.

Very likely.

When I first saw Han go over the rail, one of the first things I thought was that all his movie joy in interviews made sense. Wasn't he looking for Han Solo to die at some point way back when?

I don't think so. I think they were likely fulfilling Harrison Ford's wish while providing a pivotal emotional-perhaps even connecting moment-for several of the new cast (Rey, Ren, and Finn). I was wondering though if Chewie might die in addition to Han, seeing Han fall into that pit, that Chewie just loses it and takes out tons of Stormtroopers, going out in a blaze of glory.

I bigger tweak or poke at the EU was not naming Ren Jacen IMO.

Oh yeah I was half expecting the movie to open with Luke's lightsaber falling through space into the orbit of Jakku.

Until a week ago, I actually thought Han would survive the film- based on a headline a month or so ago in Daily Mail that Ford was in England (presumably) for Ep 8 filming.
I also thought until recently that Luke would be the Obi Wan and Qui Gon of this film and pass the torch. Again, DM headline about hail in Ireland filming Ep 8 fixed that one.
Somehow, I never connected that Ren would be a relation. I always assumed he'd be a random force-capable Vader worshipper.
Maybe I just don't read enough rumors, but, I didn't know about the Starkiller Base/superweapon until about a month ago.

I didn't go into the movie expecting Han to die, but the moment Kylo walked out onto that bridge with Han watching it was painfully obvious what was about to happen.

I fully expect Harrison Ford to appear in EP8 flashbacks showing the backstory of Kylo Ren.

I was fond of the rumor that Starkiller Base belonged to the New Republic/Resistance. Would have made for a more interesting and original film, IMO.
