What the heck species was Vilix'pran?

The idea was that Vilix'pran was as nonhumanoid as possible. The running joke was that we never got a clear idea of his species' anatomy, so the writers could occasionally toss in some new detail to keep us guessing/surprised.

Yeah he's mentioned again a few times. I always found it fascinating. A nice way of creating alien life without having to actually think about letting us see it.

Vilix'pran's offspring have wings and are called hatchlings. The only plantlike quality of his species is that they reproduce by budding.

I think any attempt to imagine Vilix'pran in terms of any familiar Earthly life form or category is bound to be on the wrong track. The idea was to imply something extremely alien.

Thinking of Vilix'pran's budding, I always picture sacks on his back developing for where his offspring will gestate until they "hatch". Seeing as how the exact number of how many children they will have is unknown (though seems to get larger with every fertility cycle) I surmise that multiple embryos can form in each "bud", so the parent may start with two buds and give birth to three offspring, next time they have three buds and eight children, etc.

As for what they look like, I imagine something similar to a bat/Anurognathus (sort of like the Gaoul from Titan A.E.), but that's just what springs to my mind.

Great. Now I can't get the image of the aliens in this version out of my mind.

There's an image on the inside that shows them growing young off their backs, but I can't find it on Google.
