What sports do our heroes play?

Friend of mine and I got to speculating once, about what types of sports or other athletic endeavors (keep it clean, kids!) our various legendary crewmembers play. Of course, we’ve seen some. We know, for example, that Kirk and Picard are both equestrians, and that Picard also enjoys fencing (as, famously, does Sulu!). We’ve seen Riker spar in a futuristic martial art, and Beverly Crusher dance, and Chakotay box. But what else might they enjoy?

Kirk, for example, might enjoy rugby, and there’s no question he’d be a tough man to take on in a scrum. Spock might appreciate the meditative opportunities offered by running. Riker’s height makes him a natural for basketball. Bashir has the build of a soccer player, and the reflexes to enhance his efforts. Archer enjoys watching water polo – maybe playing it, too? How about Reed competing in biathlon?

Unless something has been established and/or ruled out in canon, there’s no right or wrong answers here. This is just meant as a chance to take a look at our favorite characters in an offbeat way. Though if you have a reason for choosing a particular athletic endeavor for a particular character, that might be fun to include. Any ideas?

Plus the Siskos and baseball, of course. :) Bashir was a tennis player, and Picard, Bashir and O'Brien all play racquetball. Kira plays springball. Bashir and O'Brien play darts...it's a sport too, god damn it! ;)

O’Brien kayaks in the holodeck...dickey shoulder or not.

And Archer likes water polo.Wet...just like Archer himself really.

In case you're wondering why none of us are listing new sports, its because the characters already partake in so many. :)

Riker played Parrises squares, didn't he?
Troi did some sort of gymnastics/martial art moves.

In Evolution, Wesley tells that Stubbs scientist his father taught him baseball when he was young, when Stubbs broaches the subject and later tells Wesley how he recreates entire matches in his head. Despite the claims in DS9 / Family business made by Sisko that "nobody has played it in 200 years" it seems some people -not only the Siskos- remember it fondly and play it in private, long before the Cestus III league... would the game have gone underground, but survived?

Riker and his dad played anbo-jyutsu, "the ultimate evolution in martial arts" in those ridiculous plastic looking 'fantasy action superhero' suits :)

Perhaps a stretch but could we take that comment to mean at a professional level?

But we know that Football survives to at least the 24th Century. AS it gets a couple of mentions i.e Worf played it.

As aggressive as Kira could be and as fit as Nana Visitor was (and is), I'm surprised that they didn't invent a sport that better fit their personalities. Springball seems very bourgeois for a resistance fighter.

Chakotay and boxing.

Kirk was a bare knuckle fighter, comfortable with his fists. He would have engaged in sparing with a opponent from among his crew.

Would spaceship racing over a predetermined course (shuttle/delta flyer) by Lt. Paris qualify as sport for the purposes of this thread?

(I'll also assume that thinking sports are excluded, otherwise I could mention the 3-D chess and Kal-toh matches by various crewmembers).

Picard probably played polo, being a horseman. Equestrian is a sport, and he definitely did that.

Kirk climbed mountains. That's one of three sports, according to Hemingway.
