What percentage of the crew were gay?

Guy Gardener

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
152 crewmen was the number thrown about in the later season but the crew manifest was constantly in flux. But random googling claims that there is a 1:10 rule of thumb which is just make believe, however a recent government (American, I assume?) survey situates that about %4 is gay enough to qualify... So that means probably between 15 and 6 crewmen lust after the same sex if Voyager was a sampling of the contemporaneous population, which it isn't... Its the future baby!

Higher or lower?

Since it's a natural occurrence dictated by genetics and not environment, I'd say the same as now, just no one would have to fake its sexual orientation. Which would be about, in very broad and maybe wrong percentage, 5% gay, 5% bi-sex, and 5% bi-curious.

I thought that it was less than 1% something like 0.25% of the population? I read that a while back

The number probably increased after the families stopped disowning previously loved ones and random sports worshipers stopped beating people in colourful shirts on the off chance they might be gay. I think the results are still muted.

Besides are you talking about world population or US Population?

Besides 1/4 of a percent of Voyagers crew is 2 fifths of a person.

Considering that after everyone has finished paring up (Paris bitching about options in Time and Again.), the left overs might have to make some serious decisions about their extended life style choices.

That doesn't mean anything, they probably just took precautions since Voyager wasn't exactly a great place to raise a child. Naomi Wildman's mother was already pregnant before they left.

Fertility is controlled with a monthly hyposhot.

Although people like the Siskos, can just forget to show up for a booster.

Human error.

Mortal Doctors are just too busy to be constantly on top of people to get their monthly shots... With the Hologram in charge, no one gets to have the luxury of accidentally forgetting if the Doctor is making sure every one stays unwaveringly temporarily sterile.

I used to think that the Doctor was at the head of conspiracy to keep Voyager childless. Seems not?

Icheb was so gay haha....

Next you'll say that he was knocking boots with q.

Though if all the Borg are the same until they separate from the collective, and both the Queen and Seven showed an interest in Harry, but Seven and Riley showed an interest in Chakotay, well since they're all drawing their instincts, sexual or otherwise from the same place, then all Borg will try to get a leg over with Harry and Chuckles.

Icheb ran when he thought B'Elanna was after a bit of slack and tickle.

Ran so fast.

But he Gift of the Magied Seven with his brain, which is altogether quite Wizard of oz two, tin men sharing a brain and all ...However with Harry constantly going on about getting Home, it's Likely that he would make the best Dorothy, and then we can find out who his friends are.

Percentages! Evereything can be proved with statistics.

In fact, every third person on this planet is Chinese but I didn't see much Chinese people on Voyager. I mean, Harry must have been of Korean heritage because Kim is a Korean name and besides him, there were only one or two more Asian crewmembers on the ship.

Well the entrance exam only allows 1 in 5 through to the academy, and if 1.7 of those 5 are always Chinese, that means that 0.07 any given academy class is Chinese as well as gay.

And miss out on more chances to teach kids about the sperm trying to penetrate "fortress ovum"? No way!

Isn't it something like 5% of men and 5% of women in modern society? So it would be the same in the future. Although that doesn't take into account the fairly sizeable chunk of bisexual/bi curious people as well.

That doesn't mean anything, they probably just took precautions since Voyager wasn't exactly a great place to raise a child. Naomi Wildman's mother was already pregnant before they left.

Oh dear. The poster you quoted was making a joke

.25%? No it's far closer to 5% of the population.

You know the great bird of the galaxy? Well according to him, every one, every human at least, in the star trek universe is bisexual, except James T. Kirk.

And later we would find out Beverly Crusher, but maybe that's it?

The proportion of homosexuals in society is often problematic with respect to the depiction of relationships between homosexual characters on television and other forms of media, in that the cast simply isn't large enough to plausibly allow for significant numbers of homosexuals unless homosexuality or homosexual society is itself a subject of interest for the show. So you end up with the inadvertent implication that homosexuals are willing to hook up with anyone who shares their orientation, which in turn feeds into perceptions regarding the nature and value of homosexual relationships.

Yeah, I know...It was still a point worth addressing.

I'm calling out Icheb, too. I mean, c'mon! :)

Back on point, I wouldn't be surprised if the 1:10 ratio were true on a starship. But in the case of Voyager being stranded so far away, that must really cramp the homosexual dating scene. Fifteen LGBT people on the ship for seven years? What better way to test out Gene's edict of humanity outgrowing interpersonal drama? :)
