What mix is my dog?

My dog is a mixed breed, but I've always been curious at to what she's a mix of. She's a rescue dog, so she doesn't have much background, but according to the paperwork when we got her, she's apparently at least part border collie. I'm assuming that was her mother. The thing is, I've seen several other dogs on the street and on TV that are an *exact match* for her, so that makes me think it's not an uncommon mix.

So, perhaps someone out there in Trekkie-land knows a bit more than I and can help?

Labrador Retriever. Plus the darker muzzle and dark patch on the back are distinctly Alsation/German Shepherd.

An example of this combination:

^^They do look a lot alike, don't they? Cute! :) Although your dog's snout is definitely a lot shorter.

I've definitely considered the possibility of German Shepherd being part of my dog's mix, but hadn't considered Lab much. She is a little shorter than both those breeds. But if Misfit Toy's dog is any indication, it looks like the resulting mix can be a lot smaller.

I was going to say a little bit of Rot in there bc of the little hint of black at the eyebrow, near the bridge of the nose, but I'm no expert...

I would agree that the predominant breed is lab/retriever or lab/shepherd. Labs are smaller than retrievers or shepherds, though (aren't they?) so the latter would be the stronger because that's a good sized pup

I just noticed a major difference between your dog and the alsation/g.shepherd someone posted - your dog has those floppy ears like spaniels and beagles, not the pointed ears

Cross breeding introduces a lot of variety. Pointed ears are not common to all Lab-Alsation crosses.

Ah, ok.

hey since we ARE talking about dogs, anybody ever seen a 25 lb Shih-tzu? Is that an obscene weight for a shih tzu? He doesn't eat all that much, and he runs around like a maniac. My Socrates:

Yeah... I figured it was a lab/shepard mix at the first glance.

And there is the off chance it is a purebred of an obscure breed or an uncommon variant of a breed. I've seen places be quick to assign "mixed breed" to a dog. I've seen weird looking purebred Beagles (with a body shape closer to that of a large terrier).

Yeah, i'd say there's shepard/lab in there. Sweet eyes!
And your son is adorable!

Sometimes you can't tell what breeds are present just by looking. My dog (rescued from a shelter in Mexico) was supposed to be a lab mix. Just about everyone that saw her thought she had Border Collie or Aussie Sheppard in her.

I decided to have a DNA test run on her (BioPet Vet Lab) and the results were nothing I expected. Turned out she's between 20 and 36% Belgian Turvuren, Parson Russell Terrier and Siberian Husky, 10-19% Boston Terrier and less than 10% Pekingese. I wasn't expecting any of those breeds!

I'd also guess German Shepherd and Lab ingredients, and the mix can indeed be smaller. We had a dog who was three-quarter Lab and one-quarter Shepherd, and she was somewhere between a Beagle and a full-grown Shepherd or Lab in size - about 35 pounds, iirc.
