What line of work would Kirk or Picard be in if they lived now?

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Something I was just thinking about lately.

Chris Pine's portrayal of Kirk reminds me a lot of Alan Shepard, so I could see him becoming a test pilot in the navy, air force, or marines, and perhaps eventually becoming an astronaut.

Shatner's Kirk? Not sure.

Picard? Archaeologist, perhaps. Maybe a Cousteau-like deep sea explorer.

Patrick's coming for a convention next month and I have the chance, I was considering asking this.

Picard would probably be a scientist of some kind. Since archaeology was his first love and he nearly would have choden it over Starfleet, I'd go with that.

As for Kirk, I can see him as being in the airforce or navy, but also as an adventurer travelling/exploring the world. However, we learn in TOS that he was also a bookworm in his youth so he might have become a scholar. Maybe in a field that allows for some sort of field exploration.

Picard would be an archeologist, he has far to many principles to be an ambassador.

Kirk would be an astronaut.

Picard would be a diplomat, politician or high end civil servant.
Kirk on the other hand... if he's good at math, stock trader.
If he isn't, mall cop.

I don't think Picard would make it in today's politics/diplomacy, not devious enough. I think he'd stick to making wine. Maybe some Cognac as well.

Kirk? Mountie.

I could see Picard as a college professor.

Kirk? After getting kicked out of the military he'd start up one of those "massage" parlors. ;)

Shat Kirk would be a great traveling salesman, with a bimbo in every city.

Picard definitely a professor, one who makes everyone sign an attendance sheet.

Picard => Winery Owner (Chateau Picard) by day, Poet by night
Kirk => Male Gigolo / Stripper
Pine => Farmboy who only mates with animals (well, not only)

I think Picard would be an archeologist and archeology professor. Can't see him staying home and making wine in this century any more than in the future.

Picard would run a shool for gifted youngsters.:D

Hmm, trying to decide whether that's an educational institution or a synagogue. But, yes, I got the reference, so I know which one you intended.

Chris Pine's portrayal of Kirk reminds me a lot of Alan Shepard

!!! In what possible way?

Shepard, even before becoming one of the first astronauts, was a hotshot pilot known for sometimes flouting rules: He was notorious for "flat-hatting" (flying at extremely low altitudes). Being an extremely talented pilot and very charismatic to boot, he never ended up with more than a slap on the wrist.

His personality was as "type-A" as you can get: highly competitive and extremely confident. Like most of the Mercury Seven, he often drag raced his corvette. And although he was married, it's known that on at least a couple of occasions, he didn't refuse some of the many women throwing themselves at astronauts back then.

If you ask me, either Shatner or Pine's Kirk would fit right in with the Mercury astronauts.

Over the loudspeaker:

"...Let's make sure that consumers...never forget the name...Costco. Picard Out."
