I figure it started out as NX-01, as in (N)aval E(X)periment 01, probably named that way to honour the Enterprise NX-01, before becoming NCC-01 once the design was fully approved.

It also creates a nice bit of symmetry. The NX designation for the first ship of every new class could be a long-standing tribute to the Enterprise NX-01.

The Yamato will alway be 1305-E to me. Since we saw the Excalibur-M, Voyager-J and Curie-J in the 32nd century we know Enterprises arent the only ones getting that honour.

I choose to entirely ignore what is seen on the hull and the USS Prometheus is NX-74913 and Athena is NCC-325301.

Head canon? Starfleet can reassign registry numbers.* All the canonical registry numbers are in continuity.

* - Just because they can, it does not mean that they have to. They've only done it, when they've done it.

Shipwide surveillance cameras are only activated manually during heightened security statuses, at the discretion of security staff, captain's orders, and automatically on red alerts. Individual cameras in quarters are on or off at the will of the occupant. Missing footage from these red alert situations is due to damage inflicted during the attacks in question.

I actually got really bored a while ago and started writing up an entire alternate universe to accomodate my own head canon. It all started when I tried doing a creative writing exercise to explain why Starfleet uniforms changed so dramatically between TMP and TWOK.

In short, I came to the conclusion that the number of "alternate" timelines depicted in the various TV and film iterations of the franchise was actually seven:

• TOS / TAS / TMP timeline: Exploration, peace, post-scarcity economy - the best elements of Roddenberry's original concept
• Trek II–VI timeline: a divergent successor timeline characterized by a militarization spike, command culture shift
• TNG / DS9 / Voyager / Picard / Lower Decks timeline (A later divergence emphasizing post-scarcity politics over exploratory primacy)
• Discovery / SNW / Prodigy timeline: A pre-TMP divergence with early technological acceleration
• Kelvin timeline: A catastrophic branch triggered by confirmed temporal incursion)
• Enterprise (NX-era) timeline: A post-First Contact altered baseline, consistent with fan and internal logic
• Mirror Mirror timeline: a seperate timeline that has bled into two other timelines

It may not be supported ANYWHERE in canon, but it's a fun bit of mental shorthand to explain to my pattern-seeking detail-obsessed brain why there seems to be so many differences between the Starfleet of 2271 and 2285.
