What Is Your Favorite Titan Novel... and Why?

I recently read the first Titan novel. I think it was the first novel that I've read cover-to-cover since reading Dayton Ward's The Last World War some years ago. (TLWW didn't drive me away from reading novels. I just don't read novels that often. Honest!)

I'm curious about people's favorite Titan novel. Which are better or worse, and why?

Orion's Hounds and Sword of Damocles are both absolutely awsome books. Even though Red King is my least favorite of the four it's pretty much recquired reading since it is the second half of the story begun in Taking Wing.

I liked Taking Wing the best. Parts of it were quite outstanding, even though about half of the book was fairly poor. Unfortunately, I've liked each Titan book less than the last, to the point that that I didn't even buy Sword of Damocles, having been very disappointed with the portions I read in the bookstore.

I read all four books at the beginning of this year and enjoyed each of them in different ways. However, I floved Orion's Hounds and it might be my favorite Star Trek book, outside of the DS9 relaunch!

Orion's hounds was very cool. Then Taking Wing, Sword of Damocles, with The Red King bringing up the rear about a light year or two behind.

Orion's Hounds is absolutely outstanding: story, hard science, wacky Trek science, characterization...just great ideas all around. :techman:

I think Taking Wing is my favourite, but they are all so good.
I will clarify my reasons for saying that Taking Wing is the best.

It was the first in a new treklit series and I was really looking forward to it.

I loved the story and the continuing character arcs from ATT... and Nemesis.

The Red King was very good, immensely enjoyable, but it didn't have the same oomph as TW.

Orion's Hounds and Sword of Damocles were brilliant, well written and again, immensely enjoyable, but I still felt that they weren't as good as TW.

All four books are of such a high standard IMO that it really doesn't matter about favourites. I love them all.

For myself, Taking Wing and Orion's Hounds are tied for first, with Red King and Sword of Damocles being tied as well.

Taking Wing of course is the first novel in the series and as such, I had low expectations. I only knew Riker and Troi going into this and I figured the first book would be rather like the first seasons of Trek. Boy was I surprised. I loved the look at Romulus (part of the reason I ended up buying Rihannsu so I could get more Romulan stuff) and all their problems and Riker being a mixture of both Kirk and Picard captain styles.

I had a similar worry going into Orion's Hounds. The third book in the series and its not written by the team that wrote the first two, I was worried that there hadn't been enough books to set the tone for a new author to come in on the scene. And the whole story being about the troubles of an alien not seen since the first episode of TNG, my hopes were real low. And again I was shocked at how great this was. The science and action, and all centered around an eco-friendly message.
