What is the SSE4.1 instruction set and what does it do?

Just found this out that my current new game Agents Of Mayhem has this in the system specs but the game won't run on CPUs that don't have this instruction set. So what does this set do?

The makers of Mafia 3 patched this after the game came out so now almost everyone can play that so I don't see why Volition are being ass hats and not patching the game. If Hello Games can do the patch for their game in a matter of hours....... I don't know.

But anyway what do these instruction sets do?

They do all kinds of things. Some are multimedia related, some make certain kinds of calculations easier.

In most cases, a game or program does not require SSE4(.x) for any specific reason except that the developers didn't want to compile for anything older. Sometimes, there are optimizations in the code that demand these extended instructions, but it seems to be fairly rare.
