What is Kirk?

Of course other than the watching TOS and reading some of the novels he should check out the Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series. I dont think any actor is gonna go to that much trouble though, he may just read the script and do his own thing.

I've been struggling with this. How much of Shatner should be in the new guy's performance of Jim Kirk?

None. Shatner is an actor with his own style. Anyone aping said style would lapse into parody. If I want a half-imitation I'll watch New Voyages. Any professional actor will adapt the character to his own style.
Not an imitation by any means but how much of Shatner's personality is in Kirk? That brash boyness, the playful side of Kirk and his sense of humor is pure Shatner. Some of Shatner will certainly creep into the new guy's performance.

Yes, if - the - new - guy - does - a - stuttered - delivery, he's missing this point. None of that, please. But Kirk's passion? That's Shatner.

For proto-Kirk, we need to go back to the basics and reference the first episodes. The Shatner Kirk became more prominent mid year, but really came into his own in the second.

Also remember, the younger Kirk shouldn't be all that much like the confident Kirk. Even if they don't stick with the whole "brash young Lt. Kirk" or the "stack of books with legs Lt. Kirk" stuff, he should still be experience some sort of growing pains. The Shatner stuff came later in the series and thus later in Kirk's life. I would hope a good actor will embrace the character. But it also depends on who he's written.

I'm looking forward to finding out, though.

Huh?

Kirk is really just a wooden ships and iron men captain with technogear. The Horatio Hornblower/Jack Aubrey pattern captain is pretty much Kirk to a T.

I've heard someone say that "Master and Commander" was the best Star Trek movie in recent years, and I'd agree.
