What is/are the worst or most unbelievable plot convenience device(s)

I know it's sci-fi and basically everything is a plot convenience device since it's all unrealistic. I mean the Enterprise itself, a ship that can fly around the galaxy at several times the sped of light and people can walk around in normal gravity, is a convenience device.

But let's be honest and admit that even in a fake world where everything is convenient there are some that are dumber or more unbelievable than others.

Here are 5 that stand out to me:

1. The Nexus: Enough said.

2. The "We're the only ship in range" line. Granted this is plausible because the galaxy is big and even millions of ships would still leave vast patches far away. But on at least 2 occassions- TMP and the beginning of Generations, the Enterprise was literally in the heart of the Federation where they would be dozens, if not hundreds of starships around at any given time. I know the ships are meant to explore and stuff but starfleet isn't going to send out ALL of it's ships at one time. Some would be back for repairs or refits, to bring crew home, or just to have some ships there for various reasons. Yet in in these two occasions there isn't another starship around for light years and neither Enterprise is fully operational yet when they are called into action! Good thing an enemy force didn't attack Earth in large numbers during those times.

3. I know I'm going catch shit for this but....the tricorder. I know they have to have devices that can do things quickly for plot reasons...but seriously is there anything the tri-corder CAN'T do. It can analyze pretty much any medical element of any species, it can tell what kind of chemicals or elements are in the air, soil, or water of anywhere, it can do a wide variety of things detecting radio waves, electromagnetic signatures and tons of other types of energy, it can tell how much time has passes since something happened, or the age of things, it can tell what someone died from, it can be jury rigged for a variety of functions needed to suit situations, in TSFS it was able to read the Genesis' CORE and tell it was unstable, and probably a dozen other things I've forgotten. And it does it all INSTANTLY!!!!! I know it's 300 years from now and, again, they need a device for plot reasons. But couldn't they maybe have a second or even third device they use every once in a while? I find it hard that a hand held device will ever be created that can do such an incredible array of tasks on it's own.

4. Time travel- I like a good time travel episode as much as the next fan and some of the best stories "City/Forever" "The Voyage Home" were centered around time travel. It was cool at first because it was used sparingly and required some kind of advanced ailen technology or dangerous procedure to achieve. But now it seems as common in the ST world as going to McDonalds and there are tons of ways, natural or man made to travel in time. The height of it came at the end of "First Contact" when Picard just casually ordered the Enterprise-E to match the Borg's original temporal frequency and they'd be home in time for dinner........I don't mind the principle of time travel but talk about beating a a dead horse. It's like Doc Brown mass marketed the flux capacitor.

5. The great barrier in TFF. Couldn't let this list go without bringing TFF into it. So there's this big barrier at the edge of the universe that apparently nobody but Sybok has the least interest in exploring. All we hear is that it's impenetrable.....how do they know that? Were ships ever sent through it and they were all destroyed? Did scientists study it and determine it too strong a force to get through? Noone ever seems to say how they know it's impossible to get through.....it just is. Only the Enterprise makes it through with no damage and nothing more dangerous than some mild shaking happens to the crew. Not only that but a BOP makes it through as well with almost no trouble. Where does this "It's impenetrable" crap come from when two ships go through it like a hot knife through butter.

Well there are others, but I hope some of you chime in with your favorites.

Re: What is/are the worst or most unbelievable plot convenience device

The first ship to achieve faster-than-light speed from Earth, just coincidently happens to do that when the Vulcans are nearby.

Re: What is/are the worst or most unbelievable plot convenience device

I don't know , there are so many of them like, the ribbon in Generations. If you attempt to enter it surrounded by a starship, you'll be destroyed, but if you do so with only the clothes on your back then it's like a walk on the beach. I can't believe I am the only one that was shocked by this.

transwarp beaming.

bouncing graviton particle beams off the main deflector dish.

Re: What is/are the worst or most unbelievable plot convenience device

Intraship beaming, perhaps. Was it used in the other four shows after DAY OF THE DOVE?

Kira used it to beam from the Infirmary to Odo's office, before beaming to the outer docking ring in "The Darkness and the Light."

Not to mention on Enterprise that had the most primitive of all transporters. Archer does it without problem.

Re: What is/are the worst or most unbelievable plot convenience device

One word: Genesis.

I really like the two movies where it was involved. But it is totally stupid if one really thinks about it.

Re: What is/are the worst or most unbelievable plot convenience device

That enterprise B distress call scene is even worse when you think about it. He said they were just making a quick trip to the moon and back for a test drive.

I don't know where the El-Aurian system is, but I just looked up a big star system map and it's no where amongst all the planets, including the Romulans, Klingons, Sheliak, and others. So it must be out further.

So, they were the only ship in range ... for who knows how much space? What?

Pike's wheelchair could only beep "yes" or "no", when Stephen Hawking can speak at the same fluency as before his degeneration (just much more slowly.)

Eh, I'm more inclined to give it a pass since ENT established that Vulcans were in the area more commonly than first thought (and nothing before it really contradicted it, either), and then we have the tried-and-true sensors with the range of plot, too. So in this case, I'm less concerned about proximity/coincidence -- convenience could be more tech related than distance.

While Augment Tribble-Healing Blood in ID is problematic by itself, I feel like it follows a long line of tradition where technobabble saves someone's life medically in an otherwise hopeless situation. When Naomi Wildman was born, the Doctor was trying to keep her molecules of her cell walls together, for instance -- it seems that not only has medical technology improved, but also medical mishaps!

Re: What is/are the worst or most unbelievable plot convenience device

It has to be he transporter. Either the Godmode abilities it's shown time and again, or that nobody's exploited them.

Re: What is/are the worst or most unbelievable plot convenience device

Original Series Transporter Malfunctions

Re: What is/are the worst or most unbelievable plot convenience device

Original Series Transporter Malfunctions

That's a good one. I also like TOS phasers not working for some reason or another because if they did they could shoot their way out of their situation in seconds instead of making it a 30 minute process.

Yeah in sheer magnitude that is probably the grandaddy of them all. But TWOK and TSFS are so good I tend to just get amnesia about how ridiculous it is when I watch them.

The Genesis cave is similar. How does the thing in the middle of a big rock in space have its own damn sun?!?!

Re: What is/are the worst or most unbelievable plot convenience device

How about the Enterprise seems to be almost exclusively the only Federation ship (with some rare examples) to encounter strange spacial phenomenon, important encounters with established races, and other things that seem to happen almost exclusively to the Enterprise.

Re: What is/are the worst or most unbelievable plot convenience device

Time travel = the worst plot device.

Re: What is/are the worst or most unbelievable plot convenience device

24th century Starfleet combadges. How the heck does a small device with no control panel choose the correct frequency to relay to its wearer when someone else contacts the wearer in question?

I very much agree with the one about the Enterprise/protagonist ship being the only ship around. And here's a recent example. The climax of Star Trek Into Darkness. Where is the rest of Starfleet when the Enterprise gets chased by the Vengeance to Earth's local space? True, dirty old Section 31 leader Admiral Marcus probably sent the rest of Starfleet on a wild goose chase in order to take out the Enterprise and Khan unchallenged, but no other vessels in orbit of Earth whatsoever? Come on!!! Did they dismiss all possibility of surprise danger after the Narada attacked Earth just the previous year???

Re: What is/are the worst or most unbelievable plot convenience device

Flying at the sun = time travel.

Undocking a ship at faster-than-light travel.

Any time someone claims it is possible to get home without warp speed.

Re: What is/are the worst or most unbelievable plot convenience device

The Nexus makes no sense at all and is the focal point of a really dumb movie where one of Trek's coolest character eats it for no reason, so it's a tempting target. The transporters and all their various malfunctions are often pretty silly too.

I sort of cringe whenever the holodeck mysteriously, and massively, expands in size to allow, say, a baseball game to be played in full (though I do like that particular episode, so screw it).
